Has anyone experienced pain/irritation in the patella region of the knee that feels like arthritis? I’ve had this problem for several months and it doesn’t seem to go away. I haven’t run for 2+ weeks, but it’s still not getting better. It doesn’t hurt when I’m warmed up but it is really bad when I first start running and it is really bad the day after a long run. I’ve had 2 ACL repairs (1/knee) and the most recent was 1 year ago. I got shoe inserts for a prior knee irritation (fixed prior knee pain) but I think it might be causing my recent arthritic knees. Anyone had similar issues? Any Orthopods out there?
Sounds like typical “runners” knee where the vastus medialis is more powerful and constantly pulling a bit more medial via the quads. The usually “long term” fix is to strengthen the quads. Leg extensions work well.
However, my hands are only touching the keyboard right now and not your knee so …
Stopped running for a year. Had chicken cartiledge pills during that time and even after when resuming running. Improved my knees by a lot, but I still have to be careful and everytime I haven’t run in a while I have to build up carefully for weeks and months.
No shortcuts here, if you want your knees to be healthy again.
I’m no doctor and I don’t even play one on TV, but here’s my experience. I’m assuming you have been checked out recently and nothing new has developed. Diabolo seems to have nailed it perfectly. I found that using swim fins in the pool made my knees much worse. Biking didn’t seem to have much effect. When I began running again, I took it easy— short and slow— and my knees slowly came around. Time with rest seemed to be the answer. Good luck. It’s hard to sit still for too long, but that may be the answer for you.
