Army Ten Miler Today

Turned out to be 11.25 because of a suspicious package found beneath the 14th st. bridge that we were going to run over on the way back to the Pentagon. Turned out to be a good test of intestinal fortitude. I was shocked to see so many people start walking when they realized that the course was pretty significantly longer.

It was a beautiful day with perfect conditions on a wonderful course. I finished 6 minutes ahead of my goal for 10 miles.

My questions for you is these: are there circumstances surrounding a specific race where security concerns would cause you to not compete in that race?

20,000 people starting and finishing at the Pentagon. Very well run, lots of eager volunteers, plenty of liquid on the course every year, ample supply of food afterwards, sponsored by the Army (amongst others). This is a flat out awesome race… is it too big of a potential terrorist target to be part of your race calendar?

No way for me. if I am in this country, I will be back next year. Easily one of my favorite weekends of the year.

Yes, before someone says it, the Marine Corps Marathon is in the same boat.

Forgot to mention some of the inspirations along the way…

A few guys wearing full uniform (BDU’s) and boots

A marine wearing Uniform pant, boots and an IBA (interceptor body armor)

At least 2 below the knee amputees, kicking ass and looking great as well.

A guy running with the front few hundred people wearing a backpack with a large American Flag riding high.

A female rotc cadet from V Tech that I paced off of for several miles. She had the nicest…gate (read can) I’ve seen in a while. I was hypnotized by it. Thanks whoever you are.

So many other gorgeous, fit ladies out there running strong.

I am sure I will think of more…

Were there any USAF teams? Or any teams running in particular?

  • Congrats,

kd (USAF)

Perhaps, I am a bit naive, and green, but I have NEVER acessed the “security threat” of any race that I have raced in for over 30 years now. But then again I live in Canada! Thank goodness.

That being said, I have heard great things about the Army 10 Miler.

Fleck

There was at least one USAF out there. I think I read 600 total teams. Usually each Army installation sends at least one team and there are several corporate teams, then lots of other people form their own little team.

I do not know about Air Force, but there were many Army teams entered in the race (8 person teams, top 4 score). My wife was running for 8th Army - Korea. Last I heard from her they did not know what they were going to do about the times and team competition as a result of the course change.

David

It was a training run only. No way to compute the times because we did not cross a timing mat after right in front of the capital building at mile 6.something. Unless they videotaped the finish and go back and figure out all 20,000 times…

I have written off the Army Ten, but not because of security threats. Here in DC we have many races to choose from, but some have gotten SO big that the hassle is just not worth it any more. Unfortunately, the MCM is in the same boat.

You’re right, it was a beautiful day today here in the nation’s capital; I was happy to get my ten miler in this evening!

Wow, that’s really disappointing for the teams. They work incredibly hard to qualify and prepare to run in that race (as do the individual competitors, I’m sure). The Men’s team from Korea had a legitimate shot at winning the Active Duty Men’s competition and the women should have gone top 3.

Congrats to the better half, heard she did great.

As did yours! I’m sure we’ll hear all about it when they get back over here

I’m calling for a ‘beer call’ and customary ‘Coin check’ on 11/8. I’ll be in DC and will buy the beer for my ARMY brethren.

J Paul’s in Georgetown…
