I suspect this is all about getting as much visibility as possible for both Livestrong and Radio Shack. It will be interesting to see if there are other runners and triathletes on the team or if this is a Lance only “visibility” thing.
Radioshack also DID state that they are excited to sponsor another American*** ProTour cycling team.*** Sounds to me like their focus is on cycling.

I think Armstrong is still bitter about losing to Dave Weins at the Leadville 100 last summer and that the TDF is just a tune up for Leadville

That is EXACTLY what I was wondering. They aren’t just going to walk into ASO’s party otherwise, regardless of the team leaders pedigree (or maybe even especially becuase of it!).

It hasn’t been a secret. It was just officially announced today.
It has been going around since the beginning of the Tour that LA was going to form his own team. And Bruyneel is up with Astana and already mentioned that he will be heading the new team. And talk of Radioshack has been out for a few days now.
So if you’ve followed the sport well enough, there is not a single surprise here …
I wonder if he can be content for his cycling comeback to result in less than a TDF win. If not, then he’s going to try again next year and that would preclude triathlons for the time being.
With Bruyneel leaving and vino coming in I could see the UCI not wanting Astana to have a protour card and the associated headaches when they (astana) get snubbed at the grand tour invites.
Edit: there’s also an arguement that they don’t need a protour card, it didn’t seem to hurt garmin’s invites last year and cervelo’s this year.
