Armed Federal Agent Accidentally Discharges His Gun at the Airport

An off-duty agent (a rather portly looking agent, from the looks of things, which is no surprise to me, as I see them all the time around our airport…and some time on a Stairmaster would undoubtedly be of benefit to many of them  from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was preparing to board his flight at the Orlando, Florida airport yesterday when the incident occurred.

The gentleman was going through one of the airport’s TSA checkpoint security areas when he dropped his gun as he was taking his garment bag off his shoulder. The bag’s strap caught the ICE officer’s holstered weapon. Thinking quickly, the agent used his lightning reflexes to snatch at the weapon as it was falling, grabbing it by the trigger as it was heading to the ground. “ICE, ICE Baby,” indeed.

End result? The weapon of course discharged. A bullet from the gun struck the agent on one of his heels, but no one else was hurt, fortunately. Teachable moment here.

If you carry a pistol in a holster, make sure the holster does what it’s supposed to do. Quality holsters cover the weapon’s trigger and deliver adjustable tension so that the firearm stays in place…even if you pull at it with the shoulder strap of your garment bag.

The more important teaching moment here, though, is to never, Never, NEVER grab or snatch at any firearm when it’s falling. If you don’t want to end up shooting yourself or an innocent bystander, then don’t snatch at the falling gun because chances are, by doing that, you’re going to ensure the end result is precisely what you’re hoping to avoid: a weapons discharge.
