The USAT website announced a new series using established 1/2 Iroman courses where you do the swim and bike but not the run. Does this interest any of the run challenged individuals on this board?

I predict it’s going to be a huge success in the US…
I posted on this a couple days ago - I’m very excited about these races and a few others were likewise
.
It actually interests the HELL outta me. I am a decent swimmer, a good cyclist, and a below average runner (8:30 pace avg.). I will NEVER run a sub-7 minute pace (much less sub-6 min.), therefore I’m doomed to be a “middle-of-the-pack” guy. I would love to even the field a little if possible.
Nope. I don’t do duathlons either.
I would love this race…my best 1/2 im swim is 27 and change, my best 1/2 im bike is 2:32…my best 1/2 im run, however, is 2:57…bring on this race…sooooon
.
Are you a swimmer first and foremost? That is a blistering swim pace. Your bike pace is also EXTREMELY respectable. Your right, though, the run seems to eat you up. Do you think you are “blowing yourself up” on the first two legs of the race? What is your 10k run pace? What is your half-marathon (if you have done one)?
I swam 20:36 at a half this summer. I think the bouys got blown around a bit. It be suprised if it was more than 1650. Still doesn’t make me not want to run.

“The series is designed to appeal to those older athletes for whom running might be painful, or to injured athletes who still want to compete.”
In this context it sounds like a good idea as I know people who are unable to run due to injury.
I do wonder if this is really how they want to market the series, though.
Personally, I’d rather see more duathlons around.
WHAT A BUNCH OF BULLSH*T! If someone doesn't want to run let them swim, bike, drop out! I've done that twice because of injuries, at the Hudson Valley Tri in 2000 because of a knee problem, and this year at Timberman because of two herniated discs. I once had a broken arm and went to Tobay Tri on LI; skipped the swim, ran the bike and run courses.
WHAT'S NEXT? A CATAGORY FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T WANT TO RACE. They can all sign up and just come to the awards ceremony to pick up their awards.
This is a runner's sport. iF YOU DON'T WANT TO RUN, GO PLAY GOLF!
There not REPLACING Triathlon or Duathlon… They are ADDING an additional type of race. There are alot of people who CAN’T swim out there but found a multi-sport where they could compete in a race called Duathlon.
Age-group multi-sports, which is what the vast majority of us are involved in, is about getting out there and PARTICIPATING. I think anything that gets people off their couches is a worthwhile endeavor.

Ummmmm…Since when? I thought it was a swim, bike, and run sport. Do you berate duathletes for not swimming? Or the Aquathalon folks for not biking? give me a break
Even though I’m not “run-challenged”, I’d love to do it. I did the No Run All Fun Biathlon (2000yd swim, ~14mi bike) back in '92 or '93. I can do a pool 2100yd in under 27:00, and a 40K bike under an hour (hey, I’m 46); I could probably do 56mi in about 2:24 without having to worry about a run afterwards. Seems that Eagleman in MD (where I’m entered) is doing this one; I wonder if people doing the whole triathlon will be eligible for the Aquabike awards?
Triathlon came from running. It always comes down to the run and the best runners usually run down the better cyclists and swimmers. The worst part about this is that this crap is piggybacking onto existing races. Eagleman sold out 7 months in advance. They don't need more entries. I think it would be better to not make them race at all. They wouldn't take up a place in the race. They could just come for their awards. That seems to be what this is all about.
Do you berate duathletes for not swimming?
Yup.
You are way off base - man. It is something new and interesting. It is not ment to replace triathlon, just provide more opportunity and options to a wider range of folks.
Swimmers get screwed in triathlon - it is pretty well accepted. OK - that is the way the sport is. A swimmer gets into the sport and accepts it.
Now we got a new race that favors swim/bike folks. Great - if runners don’t like it don’t do it. But quite complaining.
Sorry to see your such a closed minded, afraid of change and short sighted person.
How you gonna have a bike sprint to the finish and have it safe?
How are you going to enforce draftimg when it is a critical part of bike racing?

My thoughts exactly. And there would be too many entrants to do TT style (i.e., start one very 30 secs).
From farther above, I don’t see how swimmers get screwed by traditional triathlon proportions. The swim may not be 1/3 of the total expected event time, but that doesn’t mean much. Just because the best swimmers rarely win means even less. The run is what, half of an IM bike time? Yet runners seems to win more than their fair share. If the order of the events were reversed, it would be interesting to see the results.
I saw that. I’ll be interested in seeing how many choose that option. Gotta come up with a better name than “Aquabike” tho.
BTW - they are not all 1/2 iron. Vineman is full.
