Are you faster than an 8 year old... girl?

http://dld.bz/aNMgv - 8 year old girl crushes local 500 freestyle record over the weekend! For the record, I’m faster than an 8 year old girl… but not by much

nope
I think I could tie that, but not really beat it, lol
.

I think she’s gonna be one to watch.
She was hardly breathing after finishing too!

How young/old were you when you started swimming?
I was 28 :frowning:

That’s insane. She had never swum 500 continuous yards.

I’ve been gaming for about 6 straight hours. Either they omitted her actual time from the article or I missed it. Anyway, I guess I could add them up but I’m not. If she beat the 8 minute record by “about” 30 seconds then yeah I can finally beat it after swimming more this winter.

Wow. We’d be neck and neck.
Glad she’s not in my age group.

Bet I can take her on the run. Provided the run is over 20 miles. I’m assuming she just wouldn’t have the glycogen stores to hang with me.

7:28 was her official finish time!
My best to date is 7:03 (last April).

oh, yeah, I forgot.
She also does triathlon

Looks like I’m slightly slower than an 8-year old girl. But not by that much, and I can’t flip turn… as soon as I get that down we might tie. I reckon I’d edge the win in open water!

Seriously though, when I was 8 I could only swim breaststroke. That’s pretty awesome (and goes to show that pool speed is nothing to do with power, just technique - sadly I have power, but am missing technique.).

oh, yeah, I forgot.
She also does triathlon

doing triathlon does not make one more impressive if one is already good at any one of the three triathlon sports =)

To be fair, as the father of an 8 yo girl swimmer, a lot of the girls are faster than the boys…haha.

That is really impressive though, splits were awesome!

Give her a few more years…hopefully she sticks with it, she swim a nice smooth tempo stroke…

The next young distance star will be Aussie Horton Mack, at 14 he swam a 15:37 LCM …

Good for her but what kind of “record” exactly did she break? I ask because 7:28 is not that fast for an 8 year old 500 free time. Just doing a quick search one of our club swimmers went 6:34 last year when she was 8. Another girl on our team went 6:56 a few months ago. There’s a boy on our team that went around a 6:09 when he was 8. He just turned 9 in November and went 5:56 in January. At the same meet he went a 1:01 in the 100 free.

Like I tell the kids at my pool (who are also a lot better than me)…

AT LEAST I CAN DRIVE MYSELF TO THE POOL.

That is awesome for an 8 year old, I wish I would have started that young but that must be a pool record or state record because the USA Swimming record is much lower than that.

But can she bike and run after :0) that wass awesome !! I hope she does not burn out of it and keeps up the swimming and tri through out.

if its 500m she’s got me, just. if those splits are for yards, she’s toast.

Good for your indeed.
She broke a local club record by about 30 seconds.
Pretty big deal especially considering she had never swum 500 continuous before!

Very impressive times for your local club swimmers too!

Give her a few more years…hopefully she sticks with it, she swim a nice smooth tempo stroke…

We had a snow week (growing up in Kelowna we NEVER had a snow day, but here in lil old Bellingham, WA we can lose a week to 8 inches of snow) we swam, and here she was, only a body length behind after 25…the endurance isn’t there, but body position is, and she just gets faster, and faster, and faster…

SHE is my motivation in the pool now, not all my IM goals…haha

Keep in mind that most, if not all, of those times were likely turned in by 10 year olds - not 8 year olds. I’ve looked before but I have yet to see a listing of best times for anything younger. All the top times lists and time standards always seem to start with 10&Under.

Exactly…

But if there was a record to be broken, that would be the one.
