Even if the soul killing, child melisting, inhuman, Hitler worshipping, racist, Vogat, anti-technology UCI dropped thier pointless rules on equipment is there anything really great left to do with a bicycle?
probably a lot of room for improvement in the materials and manufacturing side. Certainly the delivery and business side. Components will continue to advance and evolve. Aerodynamics/geometry… probably not so much, with current rules. My half educated opinion.
I for one like some of the UCI restrictions. If it was purely about speed, we’d all be on recumbents.
"If it was purely about speed, we’d all be on recumbents. "
What is wrong with that?
Build it with steel, put lugs on it and stop the ever-expanding 10+ speed insanity.
RIDE, DAMMIT, RIDE.
I don’t like recumbents, I like my bike just the way it is, and I want the entire world to conform to my wishes.
BAM! Your honesty is super fab. You sir are a dude amongst guys.
I think the same thing was said when, God Forbid, Campagnolo produced their first derailleur, Tibbsy.
We are months away from a launch of the Campy electronic shifter system (well I really don’t know it is months away, but I know its out there being tested). Maybe this will be the start of more human-bike integration using biofeedback, power sensors etc… heads-up displays in aero helmets anyone?
Uh, not following you. So what TODAY can be invented or improved to the point that we can say it is an inovation.
The adult-toy-integrated seat and seat post.
hmm…imagine a happy place where cervelo designs could just run wild without being limited by the double diamond design UCI restrictions. the ensuing design would take the baracchi evolved several stages through a massive acid trip.
Well, Tibbsy, if I had the answer to that question, you and I could be millionaires, and quit bitching and moaning on this forum, my friend.
But I’m thinkin…
I doubt we have scratched the surface of bike/component design.
Look at what has been done with cars, computers, tv’s. I would imagine that technology will really start changing things as prices drop for processors and things continue to get smaller and smaller.
We have only just begun…
TnT wrote better irascible responses, Markus…
;->
Yeah but we over look how incredibly simple the bicycle is. There is nothing that can be done to a bike that would change the face of cycling. Even if we let the guys at Cervelo go nuts, which we should, how muh faster are we really going to get? Is a second faster over 40k really that great?
the problem with recumbents is that they don’t LOOK fast
kind of like drag racing a Ford Focus that drops the hammer on you

“The adult-toy-integrated seat and seat post”
This was on display at the Mitchel Brothers theater in San Francisco last year. No, I did not test it out.

Economical power readouts built in. Lighter bikes using more complex composite weaves. Aerodynamics is getting close to being there but minor components such as frames and gear systems can be tweaked as new systems such as electornic shifting comes in.
Its now mainly a case of refining what we have as opposed to completely new takes. What will be interesting is how long the UCI decides to withold frame development. If it wasn’t for that we could all be riding something much more interesting…but then as a design lecturer don’t get me started on that one…
… is there anything really great left to do with a bicycle?
Full-aero, dual-suspension, carbon-fiber high wheeler.
Yeah but much faster will that make us? Outside of national or pro teams who will spend the money for a few seconds when in reality those couple of seconds are worthless.
Oh shit I just thought of something. I will need to start a new thread and get hate mail.
