Are there any elite triathletes just riding "old school?"

Meaning, on the bike, just use a good road bike, with no aero bars ,and just ride in the drops. I’m not talking about athletes who ride with clip ons on a road bike, I’m talking about no aero bars or clip ons at all, and just get in the drops.

Do they exist?

Yes, they are called ITU racers…

Yeah, but you’ve got the mini’s on those things.

You mean old school like nailing your cleats to your wood bottom shoes?

you mean like 1987 old school?

Do they exist?

Why should they?

Know any NASCAR guys driving an actual production car that’s just been modified a little?

Not that I’m aware of. Not in non drafting races anyway. That would be sorta like bringing a knife to a gunfight wouldn’t it?

I know a guy who was a former elite and has been doing tris/du’s for 20 yrs or more. He’s now in the 55-59 AG and wins his AG every time out in local area tris. He’ll often win his AG by 10-15 mins in just a sprint.

He had a P2K but sold it and bought a Soloist. This year he says he’s going to ride without his aero wheels or aero bars. Why I dunno. Probably to give the other guys in the AG more of a chance.

or old school, like Frank the Tank, and blow up dolls.

“and there was Blue. he was glorious!!”

“Blue you’re my boy!”
.

I do almost (95+%) all of my training that way on the bike. I’ve split out at 2:38 for 56 miles on the road bike w/out aero anything. Best aerobike split 2:40 with a flat.

If you look at 60+% of all tri bike fits, they would be better off on a road bike. I see tons of people sitting up in the wind on the aerobars at the AZ races. They are riding way way back on the saddle. None of the AZ bike shops can fit tri bikes though from what I’ve seen.

Yep…I remember that 2:38  was fun wasn’t it?

to answer the question…I know of one cyclist who did ride old school at the wrong time and regretted it big time…fairly sure some here know who I am talking about  (hint: 8 seconds)

It was the ponytail.

actually some drag studies showed indeed that the ponytail may also be responsible for the 8’'…but then he was running two discs vs. 1 only for lemond

I’m just thinking what an interesting idea it would be to have a “Retro Division,” in addition to all the others; its stupid, but its not any more stupid than Clydesdale divisions, etc.Its a rip off of those things the baseball teams do every now and then in old uniforms.

Basically, you sign up to do the triathlon “Retro.” You have to ride without aero bars and use a 1980’s bike with a quill stem and use some old NIke classic shoes, coming out now. There are pictures of these bikes in Dave Scott’s Triathlon Training books. We need to bring back those kinds of bikes and shoes. They ran those races faster than most do now. Yes, it would be difficult to define what is a “retro” tri bike or equipment, but we can do it.

You just sign up for “Old School.” No funny stuff or cheatin, with aero stuff or wheelsets.

His biggest mistake was being French. That cost him at least 3-5 minutes…

this exists already…it’s organized by an org. called the UCI

yep. US riders have much better fridges

Nah…it was the saddle boil. Just ask him…he couldn’t sit straight on the saddle most of the race…so sayeth he…

There is a 58cm Centurion Dave Scott Ironman Master for sale on Ebay…any of you tall boys want to take booth up on the old school thing?
