I am going to PCB next week and wanted to a 5-day “training camp” while there. I have done the race on several occasions, but never trained down there. Are the IMF bike course roads OK to train on, and are the locals friendly to cyclists?
I’ve done training camps prior to both IMFL I’ve done and never had a problem. I usually park at the Shell station at 98 and 79 ( they are very friendly). Then just did the loop. I avoided the beach section because of all the construction. One of those training loops I saw something I had never seen before…alligator road kill.
You should, however, always ride defensively. There are a$$holes everywhere.
Have fun!
I agree with skipping the coastal section of the course. Way too many curb cuts and motorists not paying attention on Thomas Drive and Front Beach Road, even this time of year.
Another route option for 50ish miles is to take 79 to 20, go left on 20, and take the Rock Hill Loop.
I used to live in PCB, and some of the locals don’t hesitate to yell or throw or spit things even at group rides. One fellow even pulled up alongside of me asking if I valued my life, because if I do I should get the hell off his road. I did have success with routes on the roads between CR-20 and I-10, and out there you can even find some semblance of terrain and a hill or two (depending on your definition of a hill).

Wow! Friendly folk in Florida.
With all that sunshine and the nice beaches, why are people so grumpy and bitter?
Having raced an trained there for a number of years I have not had a problem on the IM course. My parents winter there and I usually spend either xmas or march break down there. Even during the crazy Spring break time I didn’t have any problems.
In fact we will be down there again this march break, March 15th -21st if anyone is interested in hooking up for some long rides/runs or open water swimming!:>

I use to live up that way too. Some of the folks are pretty back woods and hate it when you are riding on the roads. I have had frozen corn, full soda cans and other groceries hurled my way when riding up there. That part of Florida really should be Alabama.
