Are Garmin Edge/405 chest straps waterproof for IM swims under wetsuit?

Just curious to know how many have worn them, and in particular whether people have had problems with them. I know the official word is nothing is deemed waterproof. Not that it’s a big hassle to leave in T1 bag but one less thing to put on would be good.

I have swam with mine plenty of times and never had a problem.

Ben

I swim with my chest strap.

I DO NOT swim with my garmin unit. Killed one that way.

So essentially you guys do it for the same reason I am talking about, just to have it on and not have to worry about putting it on in T1 (because obviously you aren’t getting any data from wearing it in the swim)?

Thanks for the replies

The heart strap is more or less waterproof (at least “water resistant” - it’ll be fine with a wetsuit). The wrist unit is not.

Yeah bugger about the wrist unit, I’ll have to wear a Polar purely for a stop watch / elapsed time…then look like (more of) a dork with two watches thereafter.

Considering how much I sweat the straps BETTER be waterproof!!! Seriously though, I ran mine through the washer by accident and it still works great.

Yeah, I were the strap so I don’t need to put it on. I don’t wear a second watch during the swim. No need to be looking at a watch during the swim - but that’s just me.

Once I get to the bike I turn it on. I guess if you wanted a watch for the swim you could discard it in T1 and just note the elapsed time so you could just add it back in.

I guess the watch in the swim was more to keep track of overall elapsed time (ie adding swim + T1). Plus I am not 100% sure the 405 has enough memory to record both the bike and run (say 9 hrs) and I want to make sure it’s working for the full run leg. Have an edge on the bike so plan is just to switch on the 405 a few km from the end of the bike course to get reception working. As such if I ditched the swim watch at T1 I’d end up relying on rough times called from family on the sidelines.
