AR-15 enthusiasts

Which one(s) do you have? What do you like about it? What would you change? What kind of sights?
What are the benefits and downsides of the 1 piece upper receiver? A fully floated barrel seems a bit odd for something with a 16" barrel.
For me, I see this as just another tremendously fun gun to shoot that would fall somewhere in the spectrum between the Rem 22lr autoloader and the Ruger 22-250 varmint rifle.
I’ve been pondering this for a while but the “right tool for the job” thread got me thinking again. I have no allusions about clearing rooms in my house with it - as was discussed in the other thread, there are other tools for that job.
The two that have caught my eye recently are the S&W M&P MOE or Colt SP6940.

I’ve built up a couple of rifles, my latest being a KISS style gun. No optics, MOE stock set, mid length gas system. It shoots good. The ones you mention are both great guns. I prefer to build my own as it gives me a sense of accomplishment. It’s really not that hard and it will save you some dough. A one piece upper will give you strength and is a bonus if you want to add optics and back up irons.

If you just want a fun dinking around gun, get an AK-47. Bomb proof and way cheaper.

But its not an AR-15
.

The guys at work build these things all the time .
It goes two ways generally , junk short M4 /CAR style or flat top match floating barrel long gun .

Variations almost like a TUBB 2000 gun to quad rails and grips … odd ball left handed uppers .
Dot sights , $25 chinese aim point copies , lasers .

I like the long barrel flat top peep sights . In the 70s I had an old A2 non forward assist C.A.R.
Grand dad to the M4 . It was junk ,sloppy stock and receiver fit , terrible to shoot if you were tall .
We would go full auto and have all 30 case in the air , as the cyclic rate was way too fast on the home made parts .

I hate the short M4 style but the swat guys can hit a 10" plate at 400 yds iron sights with a good copy all day .

One guy bought the match barrel & trigger and all the cool stock upgrades .It seemed to be the favorite as a shooter for paper targets ,
The others were all show , less go .

Get an M1a and run with the big dogs 7.62 .

The models that come with MOE stuff already have the BUI’s which is what I think I’ll stick with for the time being. I can add optics later on if the need/desire comes up. Why did you go with the mid length gas system this time? Do you have any experience with a 22lr conversion kit?

Damn, if you “dink around” with a semi-auto 7.62, you’re a man’s man.

I own three. One kiss m4style with polymer receiver. An a2 confit I use for training people and shooting NRA high-power. But my goto gun for 3gun ,arches and shtf is my LMT MRP. Solid. Go with the colt of your two choice.

What about starting out with the Colt SP6920 MOE vs. the 6940? Can I see myself with an RDS in a couple years? Yes. Can I see myself with a flashlight mount? Probably not.

Go with the 6940. The other is a sported, and I don’t know if it really is mil-spec. The 6490 is.

You can still get a flashlight mount for the MOE handguards if you want to.

Get a red dot sight. It’s more fun.

What’s the price differential between 7.62 and 5.56?

I have one of those two and a garland, and a 308 snip… I mean precision rifle. .308 is much better, but cost a lot when you shoot what I used to. Even when you reload like I do.

Ammo or hardware?

It’s not the best stuff, but will give you an idea of the difference.

I usually go through 100 rds per weapon on a regular rang session. 150 owith my rifle and 125 of 45 or 10mm during a 3gun match. It is still expensive with the NATO surplus. Pardon my typing, I’m on an iPad.

Sorry, ammo.
The cheap 762 looks ~45cents/round, while cheap 556 is in the 20s/round. That’s a big difference.

I remember reloading 12ga shells in high school when the old man and I were shooting 4 or 5 lines of trap each twice a week. I contributed money from my lawn mowing jobs because it was - gasp - 12 cents per shell.

Believe me my preference for .308/7.62 and the accountant me made me create a spreadsheet with all cost from sources and components. To make .308 work I would have to buy reloading components in groups of 1000.

Once you start reloading, does it make any sense to buy less? Seriously, for me to consider reloading I feel like I’d have to get into economies of scale.

We used to reload one night every two weeks for 3 people. You can spread out the economy of scale if you know someone that is an enthusiast as well.
