Aprox cost to install floor tile?

Thinking of putting tile in our bathroom. What’s an approximate price per square foot for installation. Nothing fancy on the pattern and the room is fairly square. We would probably buy the tile ourselves.

Thanks

I do not know your DIY skills but tile laying is really very easy - rent a wet saw from Home Depot and check out this link for a step by step process. Good Luck

Doing it yourself is the cheapest way to go, especially if you’re doing a bathroom; it shouldn’t be too difficult. Is there linoleum down now? Is it concrete underneath? There’s a product called Flexbond that works great for tile.

As Feman said, it’s not that hard. I did three bathrooms and a kitchen with no experience or help. I downloaded instructions from the Home Depot website. Most of the work is in the preparation. After that, it’s really quite simple. Good luck.

If you are looking to only do the floors, the price should be around 2.00 - 3.00 / sf. However since a bath is typically a small room and most tile setters do not like to do small tight areas the price could be higher. If you are looking to do walls/shower/tub surround the price will not be based on sf but rather the complexity of the job. Again most setters do not like to do bathrooms so the price will be higher than you might expect.

That’s sounds pretty cheap. I’m guessing my bath and toilet room is about 100sq feet. I really don’t want to do it myself because:

  1. I’ve never done it and its the master bath.

  2. I got to pull the toilet and deal with the rise in the floor, seal and all those issues.

  3. I assume I got to pull all the base molding off and put it back together.

  4. Get the carpet and the tile to meet at the doorway from bedroom.

  5. How thick of the cement sub flooring do you have to use 3/8 or 1/2?

If the boss lets me, then I’m game. I’m fairly handy and I always thought I could do it.

I think they offer classes at HD or the tile store. Probably worth the time.

No…it’s about SEVEN bucks a square foot plust the cost of the tile (most tile is around $1-$3 /sq ft).

Sarah and I just looked into it for our kitchen. We’re…uh…going to save the $1,000 and do it ourselves.

Not sure of where you live, but you might check with one of the local tile supply houses regarding subs to get a bid from. Not to stereotype but speaking spanish might be beneficial. The best approach might be to pull base, toilet vanity, etc to get area ready for installer. It sounds as if you are installing on framed subfloor. Make sure that it is well supported, otherwise you could have problems with cracking due to flex. Not sure that you will want to install another layer of subflooring due to transition to adjacent room. You can do it yourself but you will rent saw and dedicate a weekend or more to the project. And if it doesnt turn out right you might never hear the end of it. Here in Florida I could get the tile installed for <$500 by using one of the guys driving a unmarked white truck. Do not get a bid from Home Depot unless you want twice as much.
