I was referring to this: “No way I’m venturing into that cesspool”. I was so glad the politics got moved out of here. There are many terms that he could have used other than cesspool. Before being split the political threads were generally very negative. So glad its gone and I have no desire to ever venture in.
I didn’t bring in any politics, but you shat on me because you didn’t like my opinion, a opinion that said by and large we shouldn’t have a problem with US citizens.
Why do you have to assume conservative or even bring in politics? I was simply saying I’m not going to be a hypocrit and get angry at a US citizen for your government pulling out of the Paris agreement whilst my country doesn’t have a single nuclear power plant and China, India etc are charging pull steam ahead with coal? I won’t bother with the rest of the points.
You guys have serious self loathing issues..you attack me for no good reason and then worry you might not be welcomed overseas. Oh dear…
As I said all I see on the news in places like San Fran are streets of just this-drugged out zombies. Why is this insulting? Is this not an issue? Ignoring the issue seems a large part of your problems..
Not to weigh too far into the political, but public substance abuse is a reality on a couple of streets in San Francisco, just like it is the reality on a couple of streets in Frankfurt.
Unfortunately, @RowToTri booked us a place for Eurobike this year, located squarely on one of those streets in Frankfurt next-door to a “sex hotel“ and I got to see people smoking crack up close, daily. It was an anthropological experience. But, I definitely did not characterize all of Germany by those two street, just like the US cannot be characterized by a couple of streets in San Francisco.
And, not a single person in Europe this year has asked me about politics, and I have not brought up politics, so I think this assumption that everyone is living in a social media political bubble, and that will affect how they treat you as a human, might be a non issue - it’s been a non issue for me, in the same way that I can go back home to Mississippi as a liberal and be treated with the upmost respect and humanity, because I treat those people back home with the upmost respect and humanity.
This was well said. In my mind, the actions of those in office have no impact on how I (an American) will treat or interact with others while in a foreign country. In all honesty, the last conversation I would want to have while traveling is a political one.
To answer the OPs question, I too will be traveling to Marbella from the US (solo and from South Carolina of all places, but that is a whole other tangent) and no I am not not worried. I hope to soak up the race experience and see a beautiful city. It might be a naive stance, but I’m not traveling across an ocean for a race I worked hard to get to, just to worry myself to pieces.
Yep, but I wasn’t saying or even inferring that the whole of the US was like this. Obviously there are some parts that are beyond a joke. The problem like here in Australia is the Governments who are responsible don’t want to admit there is a problem because to say so would be admitting they are responsible. Seems people who lean that way politically also share the same sentiments, just ignore there is an issue and hope it goes away?
Philly, L.A, San Fran etc are all an absolute disgrace and someone needs to be held accountable and accept responsibility. Travel the world to some of the countries that are a little more ‘strict’ and wow what a difference. Wander around Singapore or Dubai any time of the day or night in any location and feel totally safe. And yet in large parts of our ‘progressive’ societies you would be a dead man or woman walking.
Anyway this is all beside the point. What I was saying is these aren’t reasons for people to feel ill will towards Americans, they are domestic issues.
Then the question should also ask what has America done to Spain in particular for them to have a different attitude towards Americans as opposed to the rest of the world….or perhaps only people living in Spain should respond?
Or you could stop being a wanker and accept the question is one broadly in response to a fear of how Americans may be seen overseas…
Fark me, who would have ever thought saying Americans are all right and shouldn’t have anything to fear would be met with so much angst…
It’s almost…. almost like some of you want the world to be hostile to validate your political grievances.
You certainly did bring in politics with your initial post. Here’s what you said:
Why would anyone give a shit about you being American? For the first time in God knows how long you actually aren’t involved in or started any wars, quite the contrary actually.
As for tarrifs.. meh you would have to be a moron to blame anyone outside government for that.
Firstly my post was about traveling in Europe as an American. Not traveling to Australia where a large part of the population supports Trump. I’ve actually lived in the EU (long time ago) and I know generally speaking they are strongly against Trump, his vulgarity and actions. Most are. Of course there is a right-wing movement there as well like any country. But every single European I know personally despises Trump. A lot of Europeans are boycotting travel to the US until Trump leaves. The Canadians have boycotted travel here. We feel it in our state as we are on the border with Canada. So I really don’t think my initial question is out of line. And I’m glad to see most posters have had good experiences in Europe lately. That is great news. But it’s not because Europeans are OK with Trump. It just shows there is more human decency in how regular people are treated regardless of how badly their leaders behave.
Secondly your very first statement minimizes the horrible things Trump is doing in this country. Did you really need to pose that question?? We are following the path of 1930s Germany and I’m not exaggerating. Some truly chilling stuff is going on that is completely un-American and it’s insulting for you to act like nothing is wrong and spouting out typical right-wing talking points we here on Fox News (the worst right wing propaganda)
We are sliding into an authoritarian regime pretty quickly. Sending in troops against citizens is also unconstitutional. Arresting immigrants who actually do pay taxes and do the hardest jobs in the country are being violently rounded up without due process which is also against the constitution. I’m all for border control, but all this money being spent on detention camps and huge ICE armies is very 1930s Germany. Everyone regardless of being a citizen is supposed to have due process and be treated humanely in the US (but not under the Trump regime)
Maybe you could start your own thread about how Australians view the US and Trump, instead of shitting all over this thread.
I’ll ignore your grossly exaggerated comments about American cities. But will say this - I’d much rather live in a progressive society where I’m free to criticize and speak up against my govt. I imagine criticizing the leaders of Dubai will swiftly land you in jail or worse…
The politics forum isn’t that bad. But I understand why people might not want to venture to that forum. It’s much more civil nowadays and Cathy runs a tight ship. She tolerates no bull crap and prevents it from becoming a “cesspool”. (thanks Cathy I know it’s a thankless job)
I have always valued your views and opinions even if we are from opposite sides of the aisle.
I genuinely feel sorry for you that you have been conditioned to believe that the drug issues in the cities I listed are anything other than an absolute disgrace. I’m not sure where your stance comes from though, wether it be a lowering of acceptable standards, sheer ignorance or just a contempt and disregard for the well being of your fellow man/women.
Cherry picking without providing a credible link or source. If I look up homelessness and encampments in Australia, there is a lot out there just like most countries and big cities. Not sure what this has to do with the original topic. You can keep shitting here. But I’m done with you.
