How does that work for seniors who take an AP test in the spring, whose college applications have already been received and a college choice made, and whose AP scores aren’t released until (typically) their HS years are over?

The entire using AP results doesn’t make sense from a timing perspective. Plus is the school paying for the test?

My daughter took quite a few AP classes and tests in HS, she always used the latest prep books, which was available at our local Barnes and Noble. Considering she passed all her tests I’d say the books were sufficient.

I didn’t know one “passes” AP tests. Don’t AP tests give scores from 1 to 5? One of my daughters got a 4 on the AP CS test, and the other daughter got a 5.

(my wife teaches AP Computer Science and gets the best scores in her district of five high schools, and AFAIK she has never been asked about prep outside of her class)

That’s what I thought and schools decide what score is sufficient for you to receive credit there.

Sometimes a three gets credit

Usually a four does

Always a five

Below 3 isn’t considered a pass.

APs are also weighted in HS gpa calculations. Take a bunch, score 5s, and you can have a gpa well above a 4.0 in HS.

Generally, when you take an AP class, if you get an A, you are given 5 points (instead of 4) toward your grade point average.

A lot of kids end up with a 4.5 GPA for their high school career.

When I was in HS it was worth more than five. We had an odd GPA system

Ok, I’ve texted my kids to ask them specifically how their HS did their AP GPA calculations. Will report back.

Re- timing of AP exams and college applications already being decided - that’s true for seniors. But Jrs also take AP classes too.

My high school was straight grades with a 4.0 being the highest. College was straight grades but a 5 point scale such that failing had a greater impact on GPA.

My kid’s high school only has two AP classes. It’s an IB school so they have an equivalent and will take IB tests, but I don’t think nearly as many colleges give credit. At the same time my high school only had one AP class and that didn’t impact my college experience much.
