Wait! What?? Working together in a bipartisan fashion? Brings a tear to my eye. Maybe there is some hope for politicians these days.

Impossible. I’ve heard she’s “low IQ.”

Don’t wanna go down that rabbit hole in this thread… hahaha. But hey… lets go Congress!! If Cruz and AOC can work together so can everyone else! Hope this is a success. Can give Congress something to build off of.

Maybe these two want to actually do their jobs. That’s a nice change for members of the legislative branch.

always liked Ted

will be interesting to see how it progresses as i think for most of those with a vote in the house or senate this would cut off their plans for what to do if they ever lose their seat. will all have to be TV pundits

I don’t think it should be legal at ALL to become a corporate lobbyist if you’ve served in Congress.

I don’t think it should be legal for congress to tell a private citizen what line of work they’re allowed (or not) to do.

Fuck you to both of them.

Yeah, as much as I hate lobbyists, especially corporate ones, I struggle with the principle of this. I can see some merit to the argument, but I think there are probably better ways to reduce the influence of lobbyists on our government.

You do that by reducing the government’s power over the populace.

Why lobby when there’s nothing to lobby for?

My mind isn’t made up about the policy. On one hand I think that it’s a huge part of the swamp problem in Washington. On the other I agree with you…

See above for my solution.

Also, usually when there is across the board bipartisanship about a particular piece of legislation, watch out.

I agree in principle, but think you still need to directly address the lobbying problem.

Take environmental laws - lobbyists from the oil and auto industries wanted to have Obama’s auto emissions targets rolled back, and they were successful. I don’t think this is a good thing for the long term benefit of our country, even if it aids short term growth and protects the auto companies from added R&D costs.

Indeed, the same can be said of US auto firms lobbying the WH to use tariffs on auto imports to boost US auto R&D (in theory to free more resources). But if anything, it will *reduce *their incentive to invest in R&D as most studies show exposure to international competition drives allocation of resources toward areas of competitive advantage. In the face of competition, successful firms invest more - not less - in innovation.

So lobbying is bad if you don’t agree with what they are lobbying for.

Got it.

They could still be lobbyists, just not lobby Congress.

From Trump’s 100 day Contract with the American Voter

★ FOURTH, a fi ve-year ban on White House and Congressional offi cials becoming lobbyists after they leave government service.

★ FIFTH, a lifetime ban on White House offi cials lobbying on behalf of a foreign government.

The problem with Cruz is he tends to flip flop.

He’s always the first one to take a stand against the flow to get airtime but ultimately, falls into line and does whatever the administration wants him to do.

Given the post above yours… doesn’t sound like he needs to fall in line.

So lobbying is bad if you don’t agree with what they are lobbying for.

Got it.

Lobbying is bad when it results in legislation that is not in the best interests of voters in general, and IS in the interests of the people/companies paying the lobbyists.

Lobbying is bad when it involves bribery/“campaign donations” to elected officials. Not that that would ever happen, but if it did, former politicians would know how to play the game.

You do that by reducing the government’s power over the populace.

Can you be more specific? Take the military industrial complex. The military budget for buying stuff like weapons (vs. just payroll for soldiers), is ~$240B annually. There are armies of lobbyists trying to get their companies underneath that money spigot.

How do you reduce that? Nationalize weapon production? (pretty sure you’re not on board there). Constitutional amendment to disband the Federal armed services? Kinda risky - Russia would love that! Just reducing the amount is nice, but $100B is still a lot of money. Doesn’t solve the problem.

I don’t see it as a big deal. It’s a contract, transparently clear before anyone runs for office. You don’t want to be held to the rules, it’s very simple: don’t run for Federal public office. I don’t see why the government should be banned from contract law when it’s a tool private companies use all the time. It’s not uncommon for private companies to ban you, by contract, from working for a competitor for some period of time after you leave. Or ban you from discussing certain intellectual property for life.
