Is there anyway or what is the best way to get decals off of a disk/deep dish wheel. The wheels in question are the blackwell reasearch disk and 100mm front and i want to get the decals off my wheels to put on custom decals. as far as i can tell, they are not stickers. any ideas or experience with this?
The Blackwell Research disc wheel was made by Zipp and the sticker is placed on the surface of the carbon. I have used a plastic spatula to scrape the decals off. Don’t push too hard or you can dent the carbon.
The Blackwell Research 100mm front wheel has the sticker under a clearcoat of paint. You have to sand completely through the clearcoat to get the sticker off. Then you will want to re-paint the rim.
If the sticker is on the surface, gently heat it with a hairdryer. Comes off easily.
Gently, since the epoxy is also sensitive to heat and you would not want to mess with your fiber.
I took the decals off a used pair of 606’s. A little bit of heat, some goof-off and a lot of patience. Used a little bit of acetone to clean off the goof-off after all the remnants of the decals was gone and was good to go.
Lots and lots of patience though…
Exacto knife to get under the decal carefully, then slowly peel. Hairdryer also helps.

Is this the same with the 50mm front??? Sanding through the clear to get the sticker off and then re-painting/re-clearing seems a bit risky to me. Have you done this yourself?
