I just called to cancel my old ISP because the missus got high speed DSL hooked up for her home office. The rep I talked to immediately offered me a “back up service” in case the DSL goes down for half what I was paying.
I don’t know where you are at, but that may still be a waste of money. I work as a mobile employee for IBM, and in 4 years my DSL has never been down. It may not be quite as fast as cable on a good day, but it is way more reliable. I will lose power to the house and lose the modem before I ever actually lose DSL service.
Good God, does anyone still use dial-up?? I hope he was talking about another dsl provider…but I still wouldn’t give up my cable. With a generator I have never lost a connection in the last 5 years.
I have two competing cable services in my area. Once a year I call up my provider to cancel, because the other is offering a better deal. Suddenly, my provider wants to give me a great offer, guaranteed for a year. This past year they didn’t even haggle, just gave me the offer.
Last week I called to cancel a subscription to a couple of things that I had been meaning to cancel for a while (wall stree journal online and some toiletries I have delivered every 6 weeks), both of which offered me a much reduced price. They also told me that if I ever wanted to resubscribe, it would be at the reduced rate. Then I set out to call and ‘cancel’ about 3 other things I get. All gave me a better rate or a couple months for free.
