Anyone training with a colostomy bag?

Congrats on making it through treatment… I finished walking the same road three years ago and have come out faster than before. As to your specific questions, I don’t do anything special to keep the bag from flopping around during running, but my stoma is at waist level, so a bit lower than yours. If after giving running a try you find the bag moves around too much there are products out there that are basically wraps that have a pocket that hold the pouch. Your swimming issue is interesting. Unfortunately for us, swimsuits are all really low cut. The top of my bag sticks out of the waist of my jammers about 2-3 cm. I used to be self conscious about this but now I really don’t care, and nobody else does either. Again, because of where your stoma is located, this will be more of an issue for you. Some thoughts here. Tri-shorts are a bit more high waisted than jammers. Maybe you will be able to pull a pair of those up high enough to get the drag from the pouch down to an acceptable level. Or… if you (or someone you know) is handy with a sewing machine you could make your own wrap to keep the pouch in place. As has been mentioned, the one piece tri-suits would work, so maybe don’t count those out just yet.

Some of other thoughts — You clearly have the attitude it takes to come back from such a brutal course of treatment. That being said, don’t get discouraged or frustrated if, when you start ramping up the activity levels, your stoma doesn’t cooperate. You will learn what to eat and when. Right now your guts are pretty pissed off, but they will behave a lot better 1-2 years from now than they do today. One other thing. I generally don’t try to push products just because they work for me, but I will say that the convex pouches with the elastic belts have been a God-send. You may want to consider them, even if you don’t need a convex pouch.

Cheers,
Dave
