Anyone suffer from Exercise Induced Asthma?

So how many people have EIA on this site and what do you do to help manage it? I thought I had gotten over having these attacks but I had my first attack in 3 years on Sat morning. I almost SAGed in from a ride event at mile 20-25 but slowed down took some breaks and was feeling better by mile 35-40. Ended up finishing but that might not have been smart. I don’t even own an inhaler anymore. Anyone ever have this happen( have the symptoms re-appear after years of not having trouble? I’m still a little hoarse and a little weezy (sp). Though I ran the next day with no problem.

I guess it’s back to the funky heart rates caused be the inhalers.

I have Asthma. Check to see if you have GERD (reflux), often asthma developed later in life is caused my GERD. I have both but the Nexium with my inhalers seems to work the best.

I don’t have GERD. I had problems as a kid and through my adulthood just not much if any problems in the past 3 years. Does the inhaler still cause your heart rates to go up? Mine always caused a 5 to 10 beats increase from normal.

I have had a few races when I would get a bout of Asthma. My dr just recomended that I keep a inhaler in my Transition bag. It has never been that serious of a flare up that I had to stop, so i will just slow down get back to transition and take a few breaths and I am good to go.

I had pretty bad asthma troubles when I was a kid (allergies and exercise-induced), but I outgrew it as a teenager.

Then it came back, after 20 years, when I was 35. I was crushed. Since then, however, I’ve been put on Singulaire (daily controller) and hit my Albuterol inhaler before heavy exercise, and I’m a new man. I’ve never felt better – I feel even better than before I had the asthma return.

I’ve run marathons, IM’s, and train everyday with no problems. The preventatiive stuff they have available today is amazing. See a good allergist and they’ll fix you up.

I do. Actually have had EIA since I was a child, and only developed “regular” asthmatic symptoms as an adult–probably spurred by being around pets (never had pets as a kid). So now I take a daily dose of Advair, and two puffs of Albuterol before workouts. That usually does the trick, though I do usually carry my inhaler during exercise just in case the pre-puffs weren’t effective for some reason. You should go visit an allergist/immunologist for a proper diagnosis. Good luck!

Last year was my first year “training” instead of just “riding”. Was having mild attacks after long intervals. Kind of blew it off. Thought wheezing and chest pain later in the day was just part of getting old. First race thought someone stuck a sock down my windpipe as soon as I crossed the line. Advair 2x a day, and albuterol before races and handy afterwards just in case. Life is good.

I usually get an attack during high intensity exercise. Which always happens to be during my monthly 20k TT. I put my inhaler on my back, behind my helmet, under my skinsuit just in case. Depending on the season/weather, I will put my inhaler in my pocket when I hop on the bike during a sprint tri. I also use Advair 1-2 times a day.

have asthma and GERD…don’t take meds for asthma because it’s relatively mild and meds for asthma tend to give me more ectopic beats…
asthma doesn’t scare me but ectopic beats do

I get it on really cold days while x-country skiing. Was never a problem in warm weather. But this year I’ve had a chest cough that just won’t completely go away after more than a month. I’m wondering if exercise is at least aggravating it. Seeing my M.D. on Thursday afternoon.

I was first diagnosed with asthma at age 60. The doctor said I probably had it my whole life. It caused mild emphysema as well. I have both under fairly good control, though I only have about 70% of normal lung capacity now. I still race because the training saves my life.

I have it and I only experience it during the beginning of bike and run workouts when I first get to a high level of intensity.

I use my albuterol inhaler before most workouts and every race.

My understanding of how it is caused is this:

We normally breath through our nose which has some kind of temperature regulator that our mouths/throats does not. (it also has something to do with moisture in the nose but I’m eating lunch here so won’t look into that…)

We start breathing quick breaths through our mouth during most exercise and bypass the nose.

Colder dryer air causes the inflamation in the lungs airways that make it feel like you’re breathing through a straw instead of normally.

I do ok with it using the inhaler and just being smart about it. I always try and warmup well and check in with my body before really going for it or racing. I understand that a cold mornign during a santa ana wind is going to mean I will have to take it easy that day.

I’m doing half ironmans right now I seem to do much better at the longer stuff than the shorter and since thats what works I’ll stick with it.

I suffer from Exercise-Induced Laziness (EIL). I’ve been undergoing treatment for it for the last 40 years, but nothing seems to help, other than loooooong, extended rest periods on my couch. I haven’t been the same since Gilligan’s Island went into syndication, sadly.

Yes, about 5-10 beats for resting pulse but I’m still in the high 30’s for my resting heart rate.

LOL, thanks I needed a good chuckle today.

Ya, every pro in the sport. I remember watching the guys and girls warm up before races, all puffing on those inhalers, trying to get an edge. Nobody told them that it really doesn’t do anything unless you are actually constricted. It doesn’t make normal air passages bigger, just in case you all out there didn’t know.

Oh ya, I do have EIA, and it sucks, all the air capicity out of you…Monty

I’ve had it under control pretty well until Wildflower this year. Lots of pollens in the air there and I ended up in the med tent after the bike. Generally, the Singulair keeps it under control and I have a rescue inhaler that I used to carry (but didn’t at WF). I was on Advair for a long while, but went off of it last year.
