Was wondering if anyone races the 1/2IM distance in light racing flats? I race my 1/2 marathons in a pair of new balance rc150s which are super light, comparable to puma h-streets. Haven’t tried them during training, but i do use them in olympic distance with absolutely no problems. Just wanted to see if anyone has any experience with this and your thoughts.
I plan on doing my next HIM in lightweight racing flats. I am currently training in the DS Trainer and the Fasttwitch 2’s… I’m not sure what shoe I’ll be using to race.
i’m not sure how you define “very light”, but i’ve done a few HIMs in adistar comps…no issues, might even go longer in them (helps to be “very light” yourself of course)
.
The rc150s are, i think 142g. i am talking about super light, these are much lighter than my other racing flats the asics magic racer. I am pretty light myself, and have had no probs, well some sore muscles, when racing on these rc150s.
Few questions…
1- what is your run split likely to be?
2- do you run in flats in training at all?
3- are you a mid foot, rear foot or fore foot striker?
have raced a few in brooks t3’s
1:17ish
run in them once to twice a week as the race gets closer
mid foot striker

I do all my races in my Saucony Fastwitch, regardless of the distance. I’m even done two marathons in them (BQ race and then Boston). They are advertised in the 7.5 ounce range.
The “advertise” that weight, but they are not. I use a digital scale and FT 2’s were 8.75 oz or a little heavier than the type-As (8.5 oz) and much heavier than my very Old Nike racing flats (7.5 oz) - size 9 BTW which is the size they “quote”
I’ve done three HIM with DS racer which is a pure racing flat (lighter than the DS trainer). But I’m a young kid and never and problems with my tendons directly caused by bad running shoes.
But I guess you are better off if you try the shoes in training for the same period of time.
I’ll be doing Tupper in Brooks T-4’s.
I’ve never done more than 10k in 'em to date, but have had no issues so I’m sure they’ll be just fine.
Will letcha know how I make out in a coupla weeks.
I raced FL 70.3 in my Brooks T4’s. NO issues at all. And this was on road, grass, sand combo.
I do all my running in Nike Free 5.0s, have gone up to 1/2 marathon distance, with no problems.
I’m 6 foot, 165lbs and race Marathons in Asics Hyperspeed flats. If you are used to it (get there!), do it. The more I run, the lighter shoes I wear even in training. Lightweight trainiers such as DS Trainiers are the heaviest shoes I currently use for my long runs.
Enjoy the half in your flats

so here is a somewhat related question, in which types of training sessions do you incorporate the racing flats…I’ve been using mine for tempo/speed work at the track, but have been thinking about doing a race sim brick to make sure I properly set my intensity off the bike
thoughts?
Ditto on DS Racers up to HIM; DS Trainers for IM. I do most of my training runs in DS Trainers and Gel Landreth. I do an occasional speed sesssion in the Racers to keep my feet familiar. No issues.
I agree with the Nike Free’s. I have been doing a lot of training in my frees and noticed I really liked running in them. I ran 11mi with them this past weekend and really liked them. I started wearing them so I didn’t have to train in my flats, I think I am going to race Buffalo Springs in my Free’s now
I used tiger paws for a bunch of marathons, I was about 165 lbs. I did IMAZ with st2s and felt good at about 173 lbs. Although IMAZ was brutally slow (4:49)
Did Florida 70.3 3 times with H-streets. I had problems a couple of times mainly becaues I use my trainng shoes which were worn out and my feet got supper wet… Now a days I keep a racing pair on hand for each season…
I have 2 pair of new h-streets sitting in the closet waiting to be broken into!! Currently using NB rc150, but they are starting to wear (only takes a few races) and was thinking of trying out the h-streets. Did you do the actual distance in them before using them in Florida?
Yes, My long runs at that time were in the 12 to 15mile rang and I had no problems in training H-Streets…
Also I’m a POSE runner… Landing on midfoot no heel contact…
