Anyone roast their own coffee?

I heard it can be very smelly & smokey? Do you do this in the kitchen? I have friends who have a lot larger roaster and they do it in their detached barn. It’s been scaring me off because of the way they describe the smell & smoke. We don’t have a good ventilation fan in our kitchen.

I actually roasted the beans in the kitchen while running the stove vent (that is… after I set off the smoke detector) and it wasn’t too bad. =) You can attach a ‘dryer-type’ hose to the top of the roaster (it comes w. a special attachment for that) and vent it outside.

For roasting small batches, it was pretty good, although when the weather warms up permanently here in MI, I’ll do it on the deck.
