I’ve got a job offer in Charleston, but know very little about the area. What’s the city like from a triathletes point of view?
Ok, you can rude out to kiawa for long rides and there are group rides which leave from the shop in James Island, there is also a summer triathlon series at the state park. Overall, not the best place for a triathlete, but the weather is great, and so are the people, its my favorite city.
I live in Charleston. It’s great here. Training, however, is tough. The roads aren’t friendly to cyclists but that’s changing. We have a new bridge(our only hill) that allows me to ride 65 miles out and back from Mount Pleasant to Folly beach. The bridge to Sullivan’s island is getting an outboard pedestrian/bike lane and that will complete an awesome loop of about 80 miles. It does get hot as hell here in the summer and damp in the winter. We have multiple pools in the area and a whole lot of ocean to swim in. There is a four race sprint series at the James island County Park, a super sprint East of the Cooper(river), and an Oly at Kiawah. People complain about the traffic here but they just don’t have a frame of reference. I’ve lived in San Francisco and Philly. We really don’t have traffic. Good luck.
I lived in Mount Pleasant for a year and still miss the place. Not a lot of shoulder or bike lanes on many roads, but not too many cars either. If you can stand the humidity and stay near the coast it is a wonderful place to live. Oh yea, the ocean is in the 70+ range for large parts of the year. North Carolina near by for hills.
We were in Mount Pleasant this week looking at homes. We got beat on a contract so its back to square one. With the school start rapidy approaching we’re looking at renting something to bridge to a home purchase. Our realitor has us concentrated at Hidden Cove and Brickyard Plantation. Either one of those more favorable from a ride perspective?
