Anyone here have radiation treatment

…and figure out a way to deal with the subsequent bone-crushing fatigue that results? I know this is a long shot, asking this, but what the hell, I’m desperate.

I had my cancer surgery last September, finished 6 weeks of radiation in December, and now am trying to train for IMCDA this June, and just having a tough time with the training. I’m just exhausted ALL the time - according to my oncologist, this is normal post-radiation. (Plus, it doesn’t help that one side effect of the medication I’m on is, yes, fatigue.)

Anyway - anyone have any ideas on how to counterbalance the fatigue? Vitamin B-12? Continuing to mainline coffee? Just suck it up? Right now I’m going with options 2 and 3, but would happily welcome other suggestions.

Thanks!

I had the same issue, as did Mario Lemieux. He played a game the same day of his last treatment then played out the rest of the playoffs. Then MISSED THE ENTIRE SEASON 2 years later due to the fatigue from his treatments. Not that you or I are Mario Lemieux, but you get my drift.

I tried to train and race after treatment, and it sucked but I dealt with it. But it took about a year before I felt “normal.” You may need to readjust your goals for CdA. Coffee is your friend, since the idea of not training/racing is ludicrous ;^) Good luck.

LOL, perish the thought! Let’s not have logic or reason confuse the issue or anything.

And I play hockey myself and didn’t know that about Lemieux. Huh. Will have to read more about that.

Anyway, at least I know I’m in good company! Guess I’ll just keep going with options “drink lots of coffee” and “suck it up.” Glad to see you’re doing well - thanks for the info! I was also curious as to how long it might take until I too feel something close to “normal”, so it’s good to have a benchmark…

I had TNR , maximum rads. It took me years to recover and build up my endurance to be able to even ride 30 minutes without being exhausted and fatigued for many days.

What I learned was to take it really, really slow, or else my set backs would giant.

I am now on year five of riding and year three of racing. Every year I get a bit stronger and wee bit faster.

I really follow the risk/reward philosophy. If I want to ride tomorrow, I don’t overtrain today.

Good luck and train smart.

Quit trolling for sympathy. It’s getting REALLY old.

You might just try asking your oncologist (maybe you already did that)…but as far as medicine or vitamins goes they would know best.

You could also try 5 hour energy…j/k

best of luck and good luck in CDA. I live in North Idaho and it is an amazing course (I haven’t done it…yet).

Yeah, I did ask, and she’s of the “well, just give it time” school, which isn’t too helpful. I was just curious if anyone had tried any more holistic approaches that actually worked or even helped. Some have suggested it could also be adrenal fatigue - but I don’t know too much about that. I probably will try the 5-hr energy stuff next! And thanks for the good wishes - I picked IMCDA since I heard the course was beautiful, so I’m looking forward to it.

And D!, damn you for calling me out like that…AGAIN. Here I thought I was being subtle by not mentioning the bike crash and all. Damn you.
