Anyone here from Melbourne? Need info on Commonwealth Games

Okay…we’re sending out our boys for the TT and the Triathlon for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne (I’m just too crap so I may go as an official)…could anyone tell me the likely profile of the cycling TT course and the traithlon course…much appreciated.

Thanks for the information Anthony…just need info on the TT course now…to be held at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne.

I’m not from Melbourne but I’ll be racing there in 2006 barring injuries etc. The bike course is flat and technical and multi-laps. Our man on the groun suggested that if you’re 4 mins down on the leaders after the swim, you’ll get lapped on the bike and therefore pulled.

hey, thanks for writing in…where are you from then? what country will you represent?

…so who’s the “man on the ground” then…can I talk to him? I need info on the TT course in the Royal Botanic gardens…beautiful setting I might add from what i’ve seen looking through the internet!!!

Who will be racing in the triathlon event? Know any names?

Top Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians, British…the best in the world minus the Americans more or less!!!

GBJ = Jersey

Man on the ground is an ex-NZ Olympic tri coach. He recc’d the course a couple of months back for those of his athletes who’re looking to qualify. I’ll find out if he knows anything about the TT course.

In response to the other poster’s question of, ‘who’s going?’ - each country in the Commonwealth (incl Aust, NZ, Can, Eng, Sco et al) can send up to three male or female athletes who meet their respective country’s qualifying criteria.

Hey man…did you do the Island Games in Guernsey?

I was there, I did the triathlon…I’m the one who helped your female athlete finish the race - according to her - when she stopped to walk and I got her going again…our man won silver medal…remember??? I must have met you then…

Latest info direct from the head honcho of the cycling for the Games is that the Royal Botanical gardens is no longer a venue for the TT, that it was decided ages ago to change the venue…and that they will announce the course plus details in June/July…funnily enough he also asked me where I got this out of date information…to tell him so they couls sort it out…answer: the officail web site!!! he’ll fall off his chair no doubt!!! heh heh heh…good guy though, answered me immediately…much appreciated customer service so to speak!!!

G’day Blokes. Triathlon is in bayside St. Kilda. A very cycle friendly place which is the start of the famous ‘Beach Rd.’

Swim is in a breakwater (pier) protected part of St. Kilda’s beach. this is part of Melbournes Port Phillip bay. A usually calm piece of water that is home to many triathlons throughout the summer.

The ride is very flat, save for a gradual 2 metre rise in one part of the road, this is over approx. 100m - hardly noticeable.

run is dead flat.

Melbournes weather that time of year is superb. It’s going to be 30 deg. C tomorrow with little wind. Great day for a ride.

When the TT course is anounced I’ll give you the run down.

…aussie aussie aussie oi oi oi!!!

…what a great nickname…Aussie Osbourne!!! good one mate…yep, the cycling organiser for the Commonqwealth Games emailed me saying they were gonna announce the course in June/July for the TT’s etc…so let’s see who comes in with the info…thanks!!!

I wasn’t in Guernsey as it was my first season of racing. That was the swansong for a lot of the stalwarts here. Only two of that team (the gold medalist is one) are in the squad for the CG. There’s no tri at these year’s games but I’ll be in Rhodes in 2007 presuming I’m injury free.

Are you heading out to Melbourne?

I wanna go to Rhodes in 2007 too but probably for the cycling TT rather than triathlon…I’m 38 now and will be 40 then…

…as for Melbourne I may be going as a team manager or something like that…let’s see what happens…

So Chris Volley has qualified already eh?

Don’t know of a Chris Volley, I’m afraid

However, to qualify to represent the island I’m on, we have to post the qualifying time twice before September 2005 and if more than three people do that, the three to go to Melbourne are picked on finishing positions from the London Elite race in August.
