Anyone have sinus/deviated septum surgery

Hey all,

Long time lurker…infrequent poster. I am having sinus surgery on Weds to cure my deviated septum and sinus problems. Anyone here have this procedure done? Doc says to take it easy for 2 weeks post surgery. What can I expect time wise until I can be back at a “normal” level of training?

Thanks

I had the surgery done a few years back and it’s like having a new lease on life. It was about 2-2 1/2 weeks before I really started doing any kind of physical training again, but man can you breathe afterwards. As far as “normal” levels of training go, I would really just see how your body feels day to day and go based on that. If you feel great at 2weeks, go for it!

Although I never had this surgery done, my best friend who is an all american swimmer did and was fine for the first week after; however about 1.5 weeks after she had a massive bleeding incident that lasted for about an hour and was brought back to the hospital, this is stated as a possibility, but is definitely more likely to occur if you try and start back too early. LISTEN TO THE DOCTOR and take it easy as hard as it may be… complications are not fun

I had the same surgery about 18 months ago. Two weeks sounds about right as far as exercise goes (at least was for me). I am VERY happy with the results of the surgery. I haven’t been sick since!

Good luck.

How can you tell you needed this done? I feel like I’ve have trouble breathing through my nose as long as I can remember. It feels like it’s always congested and it’s freakin annoying. If I pinch the end of it, one finger on the bulbous part, and my thumb in between the nostrils, and then pull away from my body I can breathe perfect! That’s a little awkard though going around making a pig face.

I know I am going to have to go by day to day. I’ve got a full schedule of events next year including my second assault on Wisconsin, so I am not in a terrible hurry to get back, but the thought of being a lazy a$$ is not looking appealing.

As for how you know if you need it…I went to my ENT after having many sinus infections. He put me on some strong antibiotics and had me come back for a CT scan a month later. After looking at me, he (who is a pretty big name guy here in knoxville) said that he was pretty sure I wouldnt need surgery, but I should have the CT scan anyway. He was shocked to see the scan as my left septum which should be a straight line looked like a the road leading up to Alp de Huez. So I think the way to know for sure is having the scan done. He estimated I will get about 30-50% more air thru my nose after this fiasco. I am thus calling it my “EPO Surgery”

Please post and let us know how it goes and what the recovery is like. The same surgery has been suggested to me. Good luck.
