We flew home from Oslo yesterday, and all three of our checked bags are lost in the ephemera somewhere between the Oslo airport and O’Hare. Switched from Brussels Airlines to American in Brussels. Does anyone have any encouraging words as to how likely it is that these bags will show up??? We filed the claim with AA but as of now, 19 hours after the filing, there is no update in their automated system… EEK! Ours were the only bags on the flight not to show up, and there were several other people who were on both legs with us. Yikes yikes yikes. I don’t give a rat’s patootey about the clothes but the XD card with 200 photos and two handmade wool items from Lillehammer are irreplaceable.
Argh, that’s frustrating. All I can say is keep very detailed documentation of the entire process (every time you call, who you talk to, what they said, etc) – if it should come down to a claim for a lost bag, you’ll want to have everything in order to get the most $ paid on your claim. Good luck.
First, I am really sorry and I hope your luggage turns up.
A few years ago, I flew Maputo - Joberg - London - SF round trip. My luggage never arrived, so on the way back, 3 weeks later, I checked on lost luggage at each location. Turns out my bags were mislabeled and either never left Maputo or went to Joberg and were sent back. I picked them up when I returned. If I had called the airlines in Maputo, they would have located them, I believe … I bet they will turn up.
i have lost (and recovered) international bags a few times.
19 hours is very short for international baggage recovery. i would hold off on any serious worrying until 5 days after your arrrival home, but keep in touch with the airline that lost the luggage.
Call the airlines on a hourly basis. My girlfriend and I went through losing our baggage (albeit domestic), however, she hounded them like nothing I have ever seen and we eventually got it all back.

I had a similar experience recently with American Airlines

Just yesterday I received a reimbursement check for $1250. Amreican don’t make payments until 12 weeks after you file your claim. Take your time when filling in the paperwork…its difficult to remember exactly what was in the bag and you can short change yourself. They lost my NAIU scuba certification card for example and I didn;t claim for it and I now have to pay $100 for a replacement card…stuff like that.
Your bag is most likely gone forever. If it doesn’t show up the next day its in a fleamarket in Brussels.
Went to Italy last fall via JFK on Delta; arrived in Italy Thursday noon. My daughter’s bag arrived (can you imagine a teenager without her “stuff” for a week?); mine showed up 8 days later. No explanation. No nothing. Now, here comes the amazing part: submitted a bill to Delta (with receipts) for everything I had to buy that week as far as clothes, toothpaste, even a pair of shoes. Total bill was around $550.00. Received a check (3 months later) from Delta, payment in full, along with a note of apology…
i lost a bag once on a Paris-Bologna Air France flight. Huge hassle. They eventually paid me what they told me was the official maximum liability. No list of stuff or anything, just a standard amount check. This is an intra-Europe flight, so if your bag was lost from Oslo to O’Hare that might be what you’re looking at. Of course, the biggest problem (if they don’t find your bags) will be Brussels blaming American and vice-versa.
Looking back, it would have been worth somehow verifying the maximum liability claim.
How much you get paid in compensation depends on wether your bag is covered by the Warsaw Convention or the Montreal Convention. One has an upper limit of about $600.
Check your ticket.

well, it was back in 2000, so it’s too late for me now.
I sent American Airlines a nastygram from their website, and just got a call from them - the bags are in Chicago in customs. Hooray. I will hold off on full celebrations until they’re delivered to my hands tomorrow morning.
I fly virtually every month and the only time I lost luggage was LGA-SEA-YVR. It turned up a few days later. On the return flight YVR-ORD-LGA they lost it again!
Other than that, never had a issue.
Lost my golf clubs flying to KL, and never recieved them. I had a choice of taking a unclaimed set of cheap crappy clubs or being without for my trip. I was staying for 8 weeks in a resort (Mines Resort), while working, so I took the cheap crappy clubs. I “upgraded” from a set of Powerbuilt Grand Slams to a set of Northwestern Sam Sneeds.
