I see them advertised a lot and with big dogs they sound enticing. Curious if anyone has practical experience.
I need something to protect the floor at the bottom of the stairs from our mutt who plays fetch with herself by carrying her ball up, dropping it and then scrambling like Bambi to get it at the bottom of the stairs. Again and again and again. It is being refinished now from where she took chunks out - but need a better solution going forward.
We have one under the dinning table. Wife wanted a washable one there where the kids spill (and the cats vomit). Had it for 5 months and still haven’t washed it yet. But it is easy to spot clean!
Not as soft and thick as a true rug. The base is basically I giant velcro pad. The top is thin and compressed, not like the pile you’d be used to in a soft rug, but more like the tightness you might see in a kitchen or bath mat. But otherwise it seems of nice quality and works great under the dining table.
Thank you! What do you think would happen to it if an 80 pound mutt chasing a tennis ball jumped off the stairs onto it? Would it stay in place? Slide around? Do you think it would protect a hardwood floor under it?
It would protect the floor. Not sure on the moving part since our dining table keeps it in place, but I’d imagine one of those anti-slip/extra cushion liners underneath would do the trick.
The top rug part is a couple inches longer/wider than the base it sticks too, so the only potential annoying part would be having the dog flip up the edges regularly.
We have these all over our house, in the workout room, in our living room and in my hoffice. Two very robust french bulldogs that fart, shart, barf, lick and play.
These rugs changed our lives. The bottom of the attachment fabric has a sticky rubber coating so on hardwoods they stay in place.

We have an 80lb dog and two ruggables. She gets zero traction on it but it stays in place ok with a carpet pad. As another poster mentioned the ends flip up a lot when the dog catches them.
They are not very substantial. And I still haven’t washed one because they are massive (even if they do technically fit in our washer). I just vacuum it like a normal rug. Would probably not buy again.

I ordered a 3x5 one for the bottom the stairs.
I’ll see how it does. I hope the front door can open over it - it does with the rug we have.
I think they are fine for that type of purpose and the experiment doesn’t cost you a lot at least. Real rugs are definitely better at being RUGS but real rugs are also a lot more expensive and difficult to maintain.
