Anyone From Vermont? Holy F*ing Gubernatorial Debates

Saturday Night Live couldn’t have filmed a better debate.

I vote for the woman in the hat. Or angry Santa. I can’t decide.

I spoke to a woman from Vermont once who earned a good living giving feng shui advice over the phone. I started asking details and it only got weirder.

That one woman want people to protest the F-35 because it can, in theory, carry nukes. Why not just protest it for being really expensive and a jack of all trades and a master of none?

…and did the non-violent revolutionary socialist/retired mushroom farmer seriously say “pack up all of our weapons and ship them to Israel so they can defend themselves”? wut O_o

Technically I believe he said the “Gazan” military… lol

It’s even better is if you watch the full C-Span videos, but the qualty of the upload was so bad I just posted a quick clip. Most of the time the candidates go off on the most random tangents (not unlike most politicians) but slightly more crazy, and the moderator is baffled and repeats the actual question.

Did you notice Chris Farley’s sister was a candidate?

And he called it the Zionest regime

Mom lives in VT. She’s pretty active in politics.
One thing you can tell quickly about VT politics - that state is SMALL. It’s like you say you’re willing to help out on a campaign, thinking you’ll stuff some envelopes or something, and the next thing you know there’s a gubernatorial nominee showing up at your door.

VT’s a neat state politically because it’s such an outlier. Seems like you click off all of the things that should make a state red, yet it’s super blue - a rural state voting for what’s increasingly an urban party.

It does have pretty much every variety of wacko. None of those candidates would seem all that out of place in my mom’s village, excpet perhaps the one who’s actually served as governor. He seemed a little stiff.

Blue or not it still leans libertarian, has lots of guns (I read somewhere that Howard Dean had an A rating from the NRA before '04, and while I’m not positive that’s true it woudln’t surprise me), and lots of small farms that aren’t all that economically viable from what I can tell. It’s the kind of place where small government kinda works, because there’s no way you coudl have a big government there. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a police car in my mom’s village. And after Hurricane Irene all the farmers were out with their tractors and backhoes trying to fix everything.

Pretty sure governor only lasts 2 years there, btw.
