Anyone ever finish an IM or marathon while taking a statin cholesterol med?

Hey all,

Just looking for people who have finished an IM or marathon while taking a statin. Anybody out there know of anybody?

Thanks,

Dave

I have not finished an Ironman (or started one) since I got on statin meds, but have done a marathon and a 24 hr mtb event. I would think there are thousands of people on statins that do endurance events on them. Not too sure what the question is looking for, nor have I read any contraindications for exercise and the statin drugs, other some people may have some liver side effects or muscular weakness (rare but reportable).

I have been on this type ofr 8 months and have not found any negative effect - Did IM CA - well the first 18 miles of the bike before crashing out. What questions do you have?

Dave,

I’ve been taking lipitor for about 9 months and PR’d at both Half-mary and mary distance this year. I have seen no effects (positive or negative) that I would attribute to Lipitor.

I am a 54 year old vascular surgeon on lipitor who just finished Ironman Florida in a slow 13.54(never having previously done a 3.8 swim ,180 bike or marathon)-Iwas happy I finished.I am sure Lipitor is not a negative issue.Often cholesterol levels will be better than anything seen in normals not on medication .If one has atherosclerotic plaques they may be stabilized.I would be more concerned with untreated triathletes with high cholesterol.Train wisely within limits and do the Ironman.

Finished 3 IM’s all on Lipitor. Although my liver enzymes came back elevated last month so now I’m off it till we recheck in Dec.

Have done 3 IM’s whie taking Pravacol. Is that the reason I fall apart on the run? ; )
