Anyone else? - Race induced NEAR DEATH Stomach Super Cramping curled in a little ball, pain pain pain

Wow! I thought I was the only one with the accelerade problem. Scared me so much I was only drinking Propel for a long time.

I found that Cytomax tropical punch is the one for me

Hell no, that stuff is death incarnate for my intestines. I’ll have to try Cytomax and see if that works for me, good tip!

I actually found that Perpetuem, made into a paste and flavored with Orange Hammergel, allows me to take in up to 400 calories an hour without the Dreaded Atomic Gut Bomb. So, it isn’t just that I was taking in protein (found in Accelerade and Perpetuem), something else is doing it to me. Many people may find just the opposite, the important thing is to find what works for you and stick to it.

Mike, I gather your friend in familiar with Chris Legh, IMH 1997. What he describes sounds exactly like what happened to Chris (intestinal tract dying).

Good luck Tai, I’ve had intestinal issues before but not sport related (more diet/lifestyle when I was at Uni) and it’s not fun.

I have had similar experiences over the last 6 months.

I finally gave in and saw a doctor. He checked my prostate and I nearly passed out from the pain. I had Prostatitis(inflamed prostate). Anti-biotics have helped but it is still an uphill battle.

Go see a doctor.

Hey Marty, thanks for the reply, thanks for all the replies everyone, I wasn’t expecting many people to write back on this one.

Well sounds like the “Exercise Induced Ischemic Colitis” might be what it is. Definetely matches the symptoms and what it feels like is happening. Funny how it’s only shorter races. I guess it’s the intensity factor. I really think I’m doing it to myself on the run just going a little too hard sometimes. Amazing the strange things your body can do to itself if you push it hard enough!

If this keeps happening I’ll probably go and get it checked out. Hopefully it doesn’t!

Yeah, I’d take a hard look at that caffeine dosage and also do an accurate sweat test simulating race conditions to make sure you aren’t falling behind on the hydration curve. It may be a short race, but in Hawaii you can still lose a lot of fluids on a race morning and over the race.

Aloha, Marty

the fluids may be the solution, especially for that Florida race which was mid 90s and HIGH humidity. The Haleiwa race was a 6:15 am (read DARK) start, overcast on the bike and the run and we finished in 52 min! Drank about 8oz on the bike. I probably would have been fine if I didn’t try to stick to Mark when he passed me halfway through the run. Staying on his shoulder the next mile put me in some serious red-zone territory.
