Anyone else on the injured reserve list?

As some of you know, I am still out with ITB. Getting it worked on still hopeful that I will be running by the fall (after 9months). Anyone else out for this season? If so what are YOU doing to pass the time besides PT,MT and ART therapies? Killing me to see all of these races come and go and the entire season pass me by!!!

mot there now…but been there before. I read a lot of books and played some pretty intricate computer games.

No running since the White Lake Half in early May…damn foot. I’ve been riding the bike, which is tons of fun, and swimming a whopping 1500 yards a few days a week. I’m having trouble getting motivated to swim when I know there isn’t a triathlon any time soon.

Since it’s pushing 100 degrees outside right now, I don’t mind not running too much, however; if I’m still out in the fall, I’m going to be very unhappy.

Adam

that is a long time to be not running… ((((hugs))))

Tigerchik, I notice you always post on the “I’m injured” threads. You must be studying to be a doctor, right?

I was out for 9 months with a high ankle sprain. Had to pull out of IM Florida and a couple other races. Was pretty depressed for a while. I couldn’t even run in the pool b/c it hurt my ankle. The only thing I could do to keep me remotely sane was lift weights - mostly upper body, but I could do lower body weights that didn’t involve my foot (like hamstring curls and quad extensions). Swimming with a pull buoy was another thing I could do. I tried to use the injury as a time to focus on my stroke (not sure if it worked though).

I also stopped looking at the Slowtwitch Forums for the entire time because it was too depressing to read about the sport when I couldn’t be a part of it. I finally came back a couple weeks ago.

Don’t worry though - once you heal up, it will feel absolutely amazing once you start running again. It’s so exciting just to be able to go out and run now. I go to bed thinking about the run I’m going to do the next day, even when it’s just a normal training run. I don’t take it for granted anymore!

Boy you said that perfectly. I use to get up so early to get it all in before the kids got up. Since there isn’t a race on the books I sleep in and go to the gym during the coffee hour 9-11. Enjoying time with the kids before they go back to school next week. Hoping once they go back I can step it up a bit more. Don’t let all that fool you- if I could be running I’d be out there right now. As my ITB has progrssed by bike isn’t much fun anymore. I had an injection in May and it feels tight ever since- so holding on that too. Made a lot of mistakes during the 9 months and probably just started doing the right things in June. Hope to see you all running soon!

Been out since December with Back issues. I did a lot of PT for 5 months then was told that surgery was the only answer, Iwish they would of told me that earlier. Had the Surgery on July 13, yes it was a friday, and should be starting back this week. Wont be running for 2 more months but running sucks anyways ;). My big race of the year was going to be Steelhead and I was quite unhappy to watch my training partners prepare and then leave to do the race. On the good side I got to hang out with my nontri friends that I have ignored for 3 yrs and had the time to meet and start dating an awesome girl. Now, I need to see if she really understood what I meant by training ***ALL ***the time!!!

I think I have you beat. I have been unabble to run regularly since 2004! Took a divet out of some cartlidge in my ankle on a run. Has hurt since then. Was becoming a cyclist since I could not run (or do tris) but there was a pile up in front of me in a race and I fractured my pelvis. So no anything for 3 months. There is a potentially happy ending. I decided to take the 3 months off and have a somewhat rare surgey to hopefully repair my ankle and return me to running. I am 2 months post surgery and 3 post pelvic fracture. Should be running in a couple months.
Good luck with you leg and don’t rush back it could just delay you further.

I’m trying to get off the list in time for a sprint or two before winter. I was doing a lot of cycling and mountain biking and swimming because my run was struggling due to ITBS until I took a trip over the bars of my mtb and injured my left shoulder and some ribs. Swimming wasn’t working after that (and I don’t need much excuse to skip swim workouts to begin with) so I was pretty much down to lots of long (and not particularly comfy) rides on my road bike for a while. Thanks to some helpful advice from an ST’er I’ve pretty much dealt with the ITB issues and have started running again and I’ve even (grudgingly) started swimming again so I’m not calling the season a loss yet.

Funny - seeing this thread actually makes me feel a little better…misery loves company, I guess. This year has gotten progressively worse for me - ITB lead to piriformis. As both began to get better, had a bad crash a few weeks ago and broke a clavicle. Haven’t raced all year - might get an October oly in if I heal quickly. Not being able to bike has been the worst - it’s so much fun and so “mind clearing”. Spin class sort of works, but not completely. Basically, I have to work pretty hard to not be a grump around my wife/kids.

Best wishes on getting better!

Well I tell ya those posts sure make it a bunch better. Didn’t know anyone else was out there plus to hear some of you have gone through an injury on top of another injury. Keep it going guys-next year it will be us posting our “roll calls”!

It is a bummer watching everyone train and then race- especially those that talk the big game and then out of curiousity you check their times- and if you were healthy you could totally have taken them but you are sidelined!!!

But this has all been for the better- we are all better people now having more balance in our lives, right? right? Tell me I’m right! Thanks for the posts!

Broke 2 vertebrae, sternum, and some ribs less than 4 weeks ago after going over my handlebars in a mountain bike race. Spent two weeks in hospital in surgery, ICU, and as an inpatient. Now at home doing a lot of lying around, spending time with kids, reading, wearing a brace, walking with the dog, Sodoku, and surfing the web. Can’t do any PT yet, but looking forward to it. Life could be a lot worse and would hate to have a pelvic fracture. Happy to have 2 chest tubes, catheter, wound vac, sutures, and hep lock out and have no head or leg injuries.
Barefoot

I’m out indeffinately with a separated shoulder that may need surgury. I’ve had to pull out of IMFL (my first) and a few smaller races locally. I cannot run, swim, or bike. I can’t lift weights other than 12 oz curls which i’ve been doing a lot of. I’m pretty bummed out, but hopefully next week I can get on one of the stationary recumbants at the gym.

My season ended way before it started…March 24, 07. Broken femur suffered during a training ride. All the races I was registered for have come and gone. To help stay connected I’ve made it to all my friends events including IMCDA. Oh ad surfing Slow Twitch a bit too much

Its been about 3 weeks that I’ve been back on the bike, it feels better than I expected it to. I’m still looking at about 6 months till I can even think about starting to run.

Good luck!

I’m now at one month of no running, and 3 weeks no riding (though I did a short ride on Sunday). Plantar fascia strain. Getting better, so I think I’ll be able to start some running later this week. I’ve been able to do some swim focus though, which is good. Means I’ll suck less when I get back…

Wow- I think barefoot is the winner. I am glad that it sounds like you are going to be alright. The broken pelvis has been a pain in the ass but acutally not that bad. It hurt for the first few weeks than was ok. It just takes a while to fully heal.
Get better soon.

PS- I think the worst part is basically spending the whole summer indoors since I have been on crutches in NYC in a 4th floor apartment without an elevator!!

Been fighting PF for almost a year now. Trained through it for IMAZ and started training for upcoming Portland Marathon, but it really flared up about 6 weeks ago. Haven’t run in almost 5 weeks and I’m going stir crazy. My bike is still hanging in my garage (since April, IMAZ) and I’m just getting the urge to get it back on the road. I truly miss running though, since it is what I enjoy most. Been seeing multiple PT’s trying to clear up the PF. I’ve decided not to compete in the Portland race in October in order to get healthy for next year. The best thing so far is that I have gotten to catch up on some sleep (not much, but working on it) and have been living in the pool. I’m averaging 13,000-15,000 yds/wk now and I’m seeing HUGE improvements on my technique. I really look forward to my Master’s swim classes and our bi-weekly open water swims.

I want to go to med school, yes. Although this summer I discovered lobstering and that seems like a cool career!!! though certainly not as lucrative.

As far as responding to injury threads - that is more out of sympathy. I seem to spend more time injured than I do healthy and I know that "AAAAA I can’t run (or swim or bike or whatever) feeling, and it sucks. hugs help!!!

Boy after all of these posts I think we need to create a “fantasy IM with a HIM option” Lets see… lets have it be in Colorado (sorry not very creative on that one and really there should be an IM here anyway!) Only those sidelined can participate. Any takers?
