I’m seeing a few people posting about the Big Apple Triathlon and now I’m kinda curious. People I know in Brooklyn Tri Club said it’s going to be one of their club’s focused races to end the year, especially with the timing working with Jones Beach.
It looks interesting. Anyone planning on doing it or have thoughts about it? Debating on putting it on my calendar.www.bigappletriathlon.com
Looks like from the old HITS series, have they gotten their shit together after all these years? Been a long time since I did one, is it still you and a few of your neighbors pitching up for an organized work out/raceday? As I recall the prices were really good if you enter early, loved those horse stools you got to sit on in transition…Anyone got recent experience?
I haven’t raced with them myself, but I have friends who have and they enjoy the races for the price you pay. There’s also discounts if you are first responder, student, etc. For me, a race in NYC is pretty cool so I think I’m going to take the plunge.
Looks like its the NYC tri course, but the swim is upstream.
Good luck with this one, I think the % of people not making it to T1 will break a record. It will be a total shitshow as people giving up will float downstream, colliding with people swimming up and trying to get out at the start point dock while people are still starting.
For those who make it to T1, the bike/run is pretty epic.
The Hudson River at that point isn’t really a river, but an estuary. The current flows both ways, depending on the tide. So unless the organizers are total morons and the permitting agencies are sadists, the swim will be with the current.
When I did this race years ago, the current was a massive factor (about 25% faster). Assuming its the same time of day (there’s only so much you can do with street closure in NYC), could be an issue. I guess we’ll see.
The current was a big factor because the organizers ensured that the current was going in the direction of the swim at the time.
Tides (and the subsequent) current are tied to the moon, not the time of day. They pick a weekend that has a tide appropriate for the course at the time of the race. There’s not “we’ll see” as it is just science.
This is why Ironman Jacksonville is going to run into inevitable problems in the future. The swim course is such that it flows one way or another due to the tide. It’s fine this year, probably next, but I think in 2028 it reverses. I guess they can just reverse the swim course.
I stand corrected about hour of day vs. day of the month.
I’m not disagreeing with you. “We’ll see” is not about science changing by race day, rather if race organizer is even aware of the tides and its impact on the swim. I imagine there are limitation on what dates they can get.
Other than for the lame current-assisted swim, and the crowded bike course (if you don’t start in one of the first groups), it’s a great race, sign up if you can. Most of the run, plus the finish line, in Central Park is a cool experience. I’d recommend it to anyone, specially beginners.
As said a million times, only issue are the whimsical NYC weather and conditions. Sign up but be prepared to see your swim canceled, run shorten, entire race canceled. We haven’t had a full race since 2018 (even then some were not allowed to run the full 10k due to the heat).
