A while back, my Dad e-mailed me a story on my high school volleyball coach hitting the 100K mark for run miles. And not many junk miles in the process, I’d guess. He finished second OA in the Detroit Marathon one year, and went a 1:22 25K.
I have logs dating back to 2000. They’re hilarious now- workouts of 6 sets bench press, descending reps, increasing weight. I used to do shoulder presses w/ 75# dumbells. “Weight- 188. Need to eat more.” is a favorite entry. Another is: “ran 15 miles this week; all this fu#$ing running is making me lose size”- from my active days in the Army. How times change…
I have training logs from 1981. First 5 years were running logs (Brooks). Then last 20 years have been tri tng logs. I like keeping my training logs in hard copy. Kind of neat to go 20 or 25 years ago and see what I was doing as a young lad.
Similar to you, I have them back to the mid 1980’s. Coaches had some on me back in the late 70’s…don’t know where they are now. But, it doesn’t matter much, because how I used to train/recover has ZIP to do with how I now train/recover.
originally in Vermont Life desk calendars, then in Jim Fixx’s running logbooks, now in triathlon logbooks. I think I will go back to the Vermont Life calendars, the photos are prettier.
Mine go back to early 1984. Used a few different books for a year or two, but started using the red Jim Fixx ones about 20 years ago and still use them…just log whatever sport(s) and distance that I did that day…and any big or small events that may have happened along the way.
It is kind of cool (and a little strange) to be able to pull out whatever you did on any given day for the last 23 years!
I’ve been using Tony Svensson’s “The Total Triathlon Almanac”. On version #4 right now for the past 10 years. I really like the format and size of the log.
I have my training logs dating back to 1977. For those early years I used to get a copy of Jim Fixx’s training log book each year from my grandmother at Christmas.
I also have body weight charts superimposed with % Body fat readings to go along with my workout sheets. I’d put one month’s data per sheet…easy to see trends that way. They don’t go WAY back, because the Tanita scale system isn’t really old…but, I have about a decade of that data.
No, people that do that are like those people in the gym that carry around a clipboard from machine to machine. They do more writing and analyzing than training. Those are the people you see at races losing 30 or 40 seconds putting their heart rate monitor on and getting their cadence going. Like they can’t tell they are not pedaling at 90 or above!!
I have some swim workouts from the mid 60s, starting in 1971 I have pretty complete training trends and interval times thru the late 80s, fun to read and remember that old Dave outsprinted me in the XyXyXy roadrace in 1972 but i beat him the next week in a TT. The scary thing is I also have body weights and demensions from then, lets say I have a wider profile than I used to.
If nothing else it helps serve memory lane as I also wrote my thoughts and funny things that happened along the way. Nothing worse than a dead skunk on the road, except for 3 live really chapped ones with their tails up and loaded and figuring out how to get by them. (July, 17th 1981)
