Anyone done the Callaway Gardens Oly?

Thinking about adding it to the list for this year and wondered what it was like. Heard rumours that the lake was only three feet deep and full of grass.

Anyone?

I did the Sprint there last month and the swim for it was round the perimeter of the lake staying between the beach and some lifeguard chairs. I would say it was about 5’ deep where I was but I am pretty sure for the Oly they go out towards the middle more. I can’t imagine you could get 1,500m out of staying along the edge. Hope that helps.

Have only done their marathon. Beautiful serene area, and very few hills. No clue about the water. I think it is the same group that puts on the run, very organized and VERY safe.

sorry can’t help much, but seeing your post brought back memories. Calloway Gardens was my first ever triathlon back in 1984, 2km swim, 40km bike (first time I ever broke an hour) and 15km run (paid for the sub hour ride). Since then I have raced at the Gardens a couple of times on various courses and different swim configurations. The swim was always alright for me. One time we swam across the lake to a buoy on the other side that you could basically stand up and walk around. Just remember though, that in most cases, swimming is faster and uses less energy then trying to run in waist deep water.

I did it a couple of years ago. I thought the race was well organized. Good field and the spectators get to see the competitors a lot. The swim was a little short, but I don’t recall any grass. Unfortunately, the bike course was changed due to a bridge being washed out which caused a little more congestion on the last lap. I’m a flat lander and I was surprised at some of the hills on the back side of the bike course. I think it was a 3 loop course. Run course was excellent. I don’t think it is USAT certified/registered/insured or whatever they do.
