Anyone doing Tri-ing for Children tomorrow?

Any ST’rs out there doing this tri tomorrow?

I am doing the sprint tomorrow before my 4 hr ride. Sounds like the changed the bike course, so it will be interesting to see it tomorrow.

I did the Olympic. Not my best race, but it’s not my preferred distance. I was pretty tired going in from racing the last two Sundays. But it was still a fun race and a good time.

I had a good race. 18th/451 OA 2/17AG. Held back a little on the run as I didn’t want to completely toast the legs for later in the day. Ended up doing 3.5 hours in the wind in the afternoon.

That race seems to draw some pretty fast talent every year. That bike was a little windy considering how early in the day it was. I was toast still from Racine last week, so I just drove home and chilled. I needed to do a race swim more then anything and that lake is so clean! Very nice park for a tri!

Yeah, I love Ottawa lake for swims. I did Racine last weekend as well, but I really liked Triing for Childrens last year, so I just decided to wing it.

I always feel obligated to do Tri-ing For Children because my owns a Fleet Feet store and he helps me with shoes and tri clothing and he has a corp. team that he wants me to race for there so I always do. It just gets me wore out after doing Pewaukee, then Racine, then Tri-ing for Children…but it’s all good and a lot of fun.

Curious as to what you measured for the bike leg. The pre-race e-mail listed 25.83m…does that jive with your reading (assuming you had a 'puter)?

Scott

I never looked…I’ll check tonight when I get home from work. I didn’t go out after wards so it’ll probably still be showing the same read out.

Mine came up as 40k on the head.

Thanks Scott…Matt Amman reported the same.

I only ask because I had a brain lapse near the end of the ride and started a third loop on the bike before finally realizing my stupidity and turning around. I ended up with 30.4 miles and am playing “what if” to estimate what my split could have been.

Live and learn…always know the race course beforehand.

Scott

don’t worry I did the same thing towards the beginning of the race.

I heard of a few people doing this. Did all of you miss the big signs saying “TO FINISH”?

My computer showed the course to be short. So did a couple other people. I can’t remember the distance but I had 22.3mph on mine while my time of 1:06 compared to the 25.83 miles shows a 23.2mph. I’d love to say I did 23.2, but I doubt it.

And I know that swim was short. I’d say a good 250-300 yards.

No mine was right at the beginning (at the run turn around intersection) - i thought we went straight - so I turned, doubted it and turned back, and then uturned again. Wish there had been a lead motorcycle.

It definately wasn’t 25.8, but it was likely 40k on the head like it shoudl have been (which corresponds to your bike computer)

Swim wasn’t THAT short, I went 17:18 and swam what I felt to be a 18:30 to 19:30 effort, so 100-150 meters short tops.

Well don’t get me wrong…I felt great on that swim. I caught someones draft for a large part of the course and I know I was faster than normal. But I did Elkhart lake in something around 22:xx minutes.

At this one I was out at a high 18:xx. I am pretty good at keeping a consistent pace and while the draft was great…I swam side by side with that guy for the first two turns before getting on his feet. So we were going the same pace. My HR was right in my normal zone while swimming alone and dropped a good 5 beats while drafting. My typical open water pace is about a 1:30 or so. Although in this case I felt like I swam really straight while it looked to me like you, Matt, and someone else went really wide. Perhaps there is a strategy to that since you and Matt are better open water swimmers than me.

So if this course was only 150 short then I would have swam around a 21. Certainly not out of the realm of possibility as I am more than fast enough to do it. It just didn’t feel like I was working nearly that hard. Now that I look at my actual times I’ll come down to 200 yards.

BTW, we’re on the same team. I’ll shoot you an email since i don’t think we’ve officially met.

…never saw the signs as I was doing my best to get around all of the lap traffic. At the end of the second loop, the volunteers were yelling “Olympic right, Sprint left” so I went right. My bad:(

Scott

I heard the same thing…so I yelled back at them and they clarified.
Don’t feel bad…you aren’t alone.

Was it me or were there a whole lot of stupid people on that course? Maybe it is because this is my first time doing a 2 loop course this year…but damn. There were people weaving all around the lane. At times I thought the only safe way to get around was to pass on the shoulder of the LEFT lane. Why is staying to the right such a challenging concept for people?

Yup…there were quite a few riders out near the yellow centerline, even when they were not passing anybody. I was averaging ~24mph and coming up on them REAL fast…I started shouting out “on your left” before I came up on them so that I would not have to cross the centerline and risk a penalty.

Scott

But, but, but

I thought elkhart lake was on the long side
.

I believe my bike distance measured in at “about” 24.5 miles (from memory). And my friend (doing his first Oly distance) saw you go right on the bike then turn around. He described it as “one of the pros took the wrong turn”.

Nice job, pro!
