With the posting of Armstrongs 90’s pic…I gotta wonder, if he had stuck with tri’s…would he have been the king of Kona? or would he have chosen the Hunter Kemper route…or both?
Ok, if noone is guessing I start that thing.
I think he would have gone with Kona. Why would he “waist” his cycling efficiency with draft-legal ITU racing? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that cycling is a no-factor in ITU races, but we all know that runners make the race most days. It’s just not very energy efficient to race at 50 km/h by yourself when the runners draft in the pack. But then again, racing both would be the other option.
i agree…not only b/c of the cycling/complete triathlete thing, but also b/c draft-legal racing came a little too late for him. he would’ve already been in his non-drafting prime by the time itu racing became prominant. but he is confidant sob so i wouldn’t be surprised if he tried to do both, if only to qualify for the sydney/athens games. too much of a guess for me to say how he’d suceed at that, but certainly he would’ve been one of the great triathletes of all time in non-drafting.
I think he would have had a substantial degree of success in the sport, probably at the ITU/Olympic level.
I think his tri career would have mirrored his cycling career. He would have started out doing “one day classics” such as Mike Pigg and Simon Lessing, and post cancer he would have gotten more serious and focused on the big Tamale----Kona
