I’m trying to find a more “off the beaten path” kind of place to go on my next international vacation. It looks like I could fly to Managua for about $400, and I’d probably take the bus or taxi to Granada and stay there for a few days. Hotels look cheap ($60-$80 for really nice rooms, $20 for cheap rooms). Has anyone been there lately who can comment?
I biked through 2 years ago but that may not help you as I stayed in small villages off the main highways. I usually avoid cities to get to know the local population but that doesn’t appeal to many.
It’s an interesting country with a troubled past but if you can get away from the tourist areas and Lonely Planet hot spots, it is a wonderful place.
Casey, something told me you’d reply…is there anywhere you haven’t been!?
Further off the beaten path would be a good goal for me, but I would have to really work on my Spanish…

On my trip to India we met up with a guy who has been travelling by bicycle for 7 years. We spoke most of the night and exchanged stories of places we have been and you start realizing how big the world is as we could barely find a place where we both experienced. He was particularly interesting because he had never been to the so called “must see” places (Grand Canyon, Taj Mahal, Pyramids, etc) because he really stayed off the beaten path, often cycling cross country in remote areas.
One of my hobbies is to read about others who have bicycled around the world, their numbers are growing and I can’t help but think we have only scratched the surface. You could easily spend a year in most countries getting to know the place and much longer in places like the U.S/Canada.
There are a lot of places I have not been that are high on my list (most of Africa, Russia, the “Stans”, large portions of South America, most of the Far East (Japan, China) etc.
Now that I think about it, I need to dust off my bike…
I was there about 18 months ago. Lots of particulates in the air. I went through two sets of new disposable contacts every day. Beautiful country once you get away from Managua.
