Anyone been to Jamaica?

Going on vacation there in a few week. Was wondering what other have done while there. Staying in Negril, and I was told the beach is great.

Visited Negril some 20 years ago. I think I visited in 1990, which was the year after Hugo. The bus ride from the airport was long & winding and you saw the damage from Hugo the entire way.

I remember doing a catamaran trip where they stopped and let us snorkel for a while. There were some caves along the coast that were fun to check out. There is a bar in town that’s kinda fun; it may be called Rick’s. There is a small cliff people jump off of into the ocean, so you’ll know if you’re there.

I remember visiting an outdoor market, mostly to look and keep the friend I’d come with company. The sellers were downright mean. I wouldn’t waste my time visiting there again.

I was in Negril last November. Stayed on the resort mostly, but did do a catamaran ride with snorkeling and went out on a small sailboat that the resort made available to us. The beach is great, water was warm in November. Had a great time. Beautiful sunsets.

Our friend rates the islands by the amount of beggars with a can on the roadside.

It has been 19 or 20 yrs for me. I stayed for 2 weeks near Runaway Bay, near Ocho Rios. I traveld on bus to Ocho Rios, Boston Beach, Blue lagoon Port San Antonio. We did an overnighter to Negril via motorclycle as well. I had a great time. I would recommed getting away from the resort to experience some of the local food and culture. The beaches in Negril were (are?) fantastic. Negril is quite touristy but fun. I am sure you will find the cliff diving at Rick’s like one of the posters recommended.

There were plenty of beggars and locals who seemed friendly and want to take you on a tour of their neighborhood or take you to some falls up in the hills- expect to pay if you go on one of these “tours”. There are fruit stands along the side of the road, most of them sell cheech and chong style spliffs (mucho grande). The local jerk chicken will be much hotter and spicier than you probably expect with Scotch Bonnet peppers being used in their homemade sauce. Have a great time.

We’ve been twice…first time on our own, second time as part of a corporate trip. Honestly, we wouldn’t have returned had it not been for the corporate trip. You’ll have a good time, but there are much better Caribbean destinations. The snorkleing and scuba diving in particular are very mediocre for the Caribbean.

Can’t tell you much other then every where we went we got handed a drink…
beaches, stores, tour buses…

beautiful land, but poverty stricken

I went to Negril about 18 years ago and had a blast. You’re gonna love it. Beaches are beautiful. Rick’s is the place to go. We did the catamaran and snorkling thing the another poster mentioned. I’ve never seen more people openly selling weed I my life

I have been twice, once for spring break in college and once two years ago with my wife. Obviously different experiences, but enjoyed both trips. I forget the name of the place we stayed two years ago, but it had a nice workout area (weights, treadmills, yoga room, exercise bike, etc.), lap pool and smoothie bar and was relatively inexpensive.

The beach is great. If you are staying on the beach take a day/afternoon and head to the “cliffs” for cliff diving, drinking, food, music, etc. (there are a lot of bars and the like up there). Get used to the idea early on that people will come up to you on the beach and offer to sell you stuff, everything from aloe, hair-braiding, to jet-ski/parasailing, to . . .

Once you are off the beach the area, particularly up in the hills, is really poor. Sad in many ways.

We went about 3 years ago for a friends wedding. Stayed at a Beaches resort in Negril. The beach was fantastic, the water so warm, made the waters of Hawaii seem like ice cubes! We didn’t leave the resort, but had a blast with the little sail boats and other stuff the resort had for us to do. We would have liked to get out and explore more - but we were only there for 3 nights, and it was a very quick trip spent hanging out with friends we don’t get to see too often, so staying close was ok with us. Have a great time!
