Anybody see the new diet guidelines?

fewer calories and more exercise. are you serious? less calories and more exercise will bring my weight down? get right out of town…

LOL!

Imagine that…Do more/eat less.

Can’t get much easier to figure out than that.

This truly is ground-breaking news. Quite amazing. Completely different than I would have expected.

Imagine- eating less calories and burning more calories could result in weight loss.

I am a skeptic. I’ll need to see some more documentation before I buy into this theory.

The fad diet industry is a 40 billion dollar a year business (yes - 40 billion).

Ever notice how many fad diets come and go. Somebody writes a book, makes millions and then laughs all the way to the Cayman Islands. These fad diets have no scientific or clinical basis, but hype them up, get a testimonial or two from a celebrity and you’re bound to make a fortune. People loose weight intitially but soon gain it right back.

Figuring it out isn’t rocket science - eat less calories and burn more off. And it has to be long term. There is no quick fix.

Thank god I’m in europe we only have kilojules so this new diet craze won’t effect us.

Miracles of modern science, amazing what them darn yanky scientists will come up with.

I was not aware that the USDA included a reference to booze. Someone help me understand why from a nutritional standpoint it is okay for men to have 2 when Uncle Sam figures women can only handle 1 ?

From the release this morning:

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES Those who choose to drink alcoholic beverages should do so sensibly and in moderation – defined as the consumption of up to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men. Alcoholic beverages should not be consumed by some individuals, including those who cannot restrict their alcohol intake, women of childbearing age who may become pregnant, pregnant and lactating women, children and adolescents, individuals taking medications that can interact with alcohol, and those with specific medical conditions. Alcoholic beverages should be avoided by individuals engaging in activities that require attention, skill, or coordination, such as driving or operating machinery.

You know, last night I actually watched the “finale” of The Biggest Loser, the weightloss show where the person who loses the most (percentage) wins $250K. I have to admit, one thing that I really liked about the show is that I felt they made it clear that losing weight is NOT easy. It takes work, but it can be done. These people lost a ton of weight. (Almost literally) Hopefully people who watch the show get the point that there’s no magic to weight loss. It takes work (exercise) and discipline (food intake). Drinking 10 “weight loss” shakes a day that are 800 calories each will only make your ass fatter.

Common sense is anything but common.

4 servings of fruit, 6 of veggies per day. That’s insane. Less than 5% of the population CAN do that, let alone WILL do that.

size matters - alcohol is more concentrated in a smaller body, so the BAC (blood alcohol concentration) is higher. Also, men typically have more muscle than women, which muscle absorbs the alcohol better.

As a transplant to this country from Europe I have to say that you have one diet problem and one diet problem alone…portion size.

People in the US go to a restaurant and they expect a plate with its own zip code and they want the food piled up at least a couple of feet. They want to wash it all down with a gallon of Coke and get a styrofoam box to ship home the leftovers.

People in Europe and I’d hazard a guess the rest of the world too, eat human not water buffalo sized portions of food.

The food itself isn’t that much more unhealthy, there’s just sooooooo much more of it.

That makes sense.

The concentration factor based on body mass however seems to be more an issue with those already in good shape or athletically inclined. Looking around the general population these days…I’m hard pressed to see large numbers of petite women. Most of the guys are a little size challenged too. Once you are over 150-160, does one drink or two really matter?

All you can eat! All you can eat! It’s not a meal, it’s a physical challenge!!

When I was in school in PA there was a steakhouse that I loved. The prime rib came like pancakes in 12 oz increments. Nothing like killing a 48oz steak and washing it down with a table’s worth of beer. Aghhhhhhhhh…

They actually had a 108oz steak on the menu. A friend of mine was a waitress there and was the first to ever serve one.

GOD BLESS AMERICA

"you have one diet problem and one diet problem alone…portion size. "

Exactly. It’s the “super size” everything that is making people so fat. When my wife and I go out for a meal we usually buy one and split it.

Read recently that the average hamburger is 128% bigger than it was thirty years ago.

Amazing isn’t it? I’m questioned regularly by new weight challenged members coming into our club and my classes about weight management. You can’t imagine the looks I first get when I suggest rather than trying these wild and crazy convoluted diets and all, they simply change the equation a little bit at first. Keep it simple. Don’t change a lot of what you eat right now…just eat less and do more. It is manageable, easy to keep track of, and it works. Just be patient with it. Once you then see the progress and are more comfortable with the increased activity level you can begin making more notable changes on both sides of the equation. Eat a little less, and start working on more appropriate food choices. And then increase the activity level some more. I love to see the smiles when they step off the scales after a couple weeks…and more importantly…stay with it since they did not get discouraged by an out of control plan.

Not really enough meat to stretch this into a best seller. Not enough diet psychobabble mumbo jumbo and people these days hate really easy answers.

I am an extremist a lot of times which is not healthy. Definitely not healthy.

Around November 2001 I went to the Chaparral Steakhouse in Winter Garden, Florida with a friend who is 6’8" 440 lbs (thats 200 kilos!). As we studied the menu we saw that a 22 oz Porterhouse was $23.95 and the 96 oz steak was $34.95 and if your finished it (along with a salad and baked potato in 75 minutes) you get it for FREE! We both reasoned that even if we did not finish it that it was a much better deal financially.

It was kind of like doing a long race. It started out easy and got harder and harder as I approached the finish. When there were only five minutes left and I only had a few bites left our waitress came by and said “Oh my God the skinny guy is going to do it!”

I finished it and got my picture on the wall. My BIG friend ate ~3lbs and took home the leftovers ground it up and made shepherds pie. We did that on a Friday night and i was not hungry again until Tuesday of the following week

it is already in process!

That’s awesome!! Congratulations.

I love sport eating. I have a friend who’s determined exactly how many McDonalds hamburgers he can eat in a single sitting. He’s verified this with repeated trials. Ever sit down with a buddy and a bucket of KFC? “Nobody’s leaving till this is done.” I freaked a buddy out a while back by eating 5 McDonalds Quarter Pounders. I was hugry. Besides, I ordered nine for everyone in the car (4 of us) and nobody else was eating.

Sorry, what’s this thread about…

“eating 5 McDonalds Quarter Pounders”

Yuck. Makes me feel like puking just thinking about it.

Wife and I pride ourselves in the fact that we haven’t had a McD’s for seven years.
