I have a friend of mine who doesn’t like posting but he’s a great swimmer./triathlete. He is swimming the English Channel this summer, and he’s on vacation seeing his wife’s family in Santa Cruz. And he asks me to ask, if any tri clubs out there swim in the ocean and at what time, who can he meet up with swim out there.
I went to UC Santa Cruz (go slugs!) and spent my formidable years surfing that zone. The water is cooooooold, even in summer, so any swimming requires a good wetsuit. Just watch out for the local surfers, they’ll aim for you if you are anywhere near their wave.
Here’s a link to the Santa Cruz Triathlon Association: http://www.sctriathlon.com/scta/
It looks like there is an open water swim - look under “training”. Interesting, non-members aren’t covered by SCTA’s insurance on the open water swim. Hmmmm…
Hope that helps!

Yep! I almost wrote that too! Boothrand, warn your friend, that is a real concern. Some fellow surfer-chicks and I used to surf a relatively deserted beach in SC only to find out later that it was a well known great white feeding zone. Seems the surfer boys were more than happy to leave that beach to the surfer chicks. Looks like tri-guys are much more kind…
damn great whites are trolling along the central coast right now in numbers. a lot of sightings and a few attacks.
