have to go up there again for work for 7-8 days- last time I couldn’t find a pool ( The YMCA apparently closed their pool for renovations)- anyone have a recommendation ( ideally outdoor 50m ) that is fairly close, without going into downtown boston?

Why not hit up Walden Pond instead?
There is also Mystic Lake, which is in Arlington (closer than Walden).

Another vote for Walden here, it’s about a 20-25 minute drive from Woburn (Rt 128 south to Rt 2 west, take left at lights for Rt 126 - you’ll see a sign for Walden at the traffic light and the parking lot is a short drive from the light and on the left across the street from the pond). It’s about a 1/2 mile swim to the other side of the pond and there are usually a few other triathletes swimming there at any time of the day.
I don’t know of any outdoor 50m pools in the area, but a good pool close to Woburn is the Burbank YMCA in Reading, probably about a 5-10 minute drive. Nice 8-lane pool with lap swim hours all day long (although they have a lot of kids swim clubs that swim there so the lap swimming is sometimes restricted to 1-2 lanes). They have a Masters group that swims there as well. They charge a one-day fee of $5 for non-members.
