About 15 minutes after the swim start in Lake Placid Sunday a woman in a wetsuit, goggles and cap walked through the crowd along Mirror Lake (by the toboggan chute). About 15 minutes later, as the first big pack of swimmers was nearing the end of their first lap she swam straight out from the shore about 50 meters from the end of the swim, right between the kayaks, and attempted to blend into the pack. She obviously couldn’t swim and stuck out like a sore thumb among the hour swimmers since she was dog paddling with her head completely out of the water. A race official waded into the water and pulled her out, held her firmly by the arm and led her away (I guess to Ironman jail). I can only guess that she entered the lake by crossing the timing mat then went ashore and planned to do the same for the 2nd loop. If she was trying to cheat it’s one of the worst attempts I’ve ever seen. Anybody know any more about this?

My buddies descibed something similar, hiding out in the bushes, then trying to blend in. I was working near the bike exit, guiding athletes to make a right at the end of the long straight run. While there, a female athlete was trying to leave T1 with her bike and maybe transition bag. Official is telling her numerous times, NO BIKES LEAVE BEFORE 6PM, english may have been her second language, which is why it took numerous times, this must have been her.

I was there and did not see that but I did see something strange at the run start. About 3-4 of the pro women had hit the course and this lady comes jogging down the hill (we were about 50 yds down the hill from the run start) with a high # on so she’s obviously an age grouper. She also did not look very fit at all and did not look like she could have biked that fast, she was doing a very slow shuffle of a run and we all kind of looked on like how did she get out on the course so fast. The announcer also never said anything about her being the first female age grouper on course. As she got a couple hundred yards down the hill before the turn they called her name and said ‘if you can hear us, turn around NOW’ 2 or 3 times but she was gone by that point. Don’t know what happened to her, but we did see a race van come up the hill about 20 minutes later with a lady sitting in the back, kind of looked like the same person but I could not tell.
Happens in every race with loops I guess.
In Frankfurt, where you have to run 4 loops we saw some athletes running down the finish chute (which is quite a long way) only to hear from the volunteers they have to run another loop. Must be an awful feeling to have to run back through the crowds…
In Roth, as the pro women came into T2 a male athlete came into transition, realized he had another loop to do and got back on the bike course. But you have to ride 5miles back to the crossing where he went wrong, and most of it is uphill. I wouldn’t need those additional miles, not to mention the big crowds in Roth wondering what the guy was doing…
