Anybody invest in REITs?

So, after evaluating my entire portfolio, I’ve decided to ditch some loser stocks, take a capital loss, and reinvest the money elsewhere. Since my 401ks and other investments are stock heavy, I would like to diversify into real estate. I’m a little nervous about just buying land outright; so I was thinking about putting some money into a REIT. Anyone out there with decent gains in REITs, or can pass on some important things to consider before investing in a REIT? Thanks…

I invested in a Canadian REIT and I sold it last month for a 32% gain, held for just over a year. The Canadian market held up pretty good compared with the U.S so decided to invest there, at least in that sector.
