Anybody from Washington - Wineman/Lake Chalen?'s

Hey all,

I’m thinking of visiting my brother up in Washington and noticed there was a “triathlon festival” at Lake Chelan from July 9th-July 17th. They have a lot of sprint races - called My First and Next Triathlon. The week ends with a half IM that sounds fun - “Wineman”. Anybody have any info about this? It sounds like the 1st year for the half…

Check www.seatri.org for some postings on it. Basically they say it’s not the best event and that you might want to consider other events.

I did it last year. My advice, don’t do it. For your $100 entry fee, you get a generic t-shirt, generic finisher’s medal and some bananas and gatorade at the finish. I calculated that they pocketed about $80 profit from every racer. There are no awards - even for the “My Next Tri” participants - and they have 5 races on the course over the 1 1/2 weeks.

If you just want a good work out and don’t care about the entry fee or normal race swag/perks/awards, then maybe do it. The course is very fast and fairly scenic as it follows the lake shore.

There is an OLY distance race in Yakima (about 1 1/2 south) on 7/10 and a 1/2 IM in Osoyoos, BC (about 2 hours north, IMC bike course) on the same day. These races have gotten good reviews.

“You know you are getting old when you see your father in the mirror.” anon.

Thanks for the heads up.

7/10 won’t work for me time-wise…

Thanks for the heads up. I don’t mind a bad t-shirt or lack of good food at the end as long as I know ahead of time what to expect (and its not too much $$$). As long as the course is well-marked/I do not get lost/its safe and there are aid stations on the run - I’ll be happy.

Its also the first year and I don’t want the event to get cancelled…

Thanks,

Dave

It may be the first at this distance, but the RD has been putting on sprint races at Lake Chelan for the past few years. They also put on a 1/2 IM in BC at Harrison Hot Springs (Bigfoot) and the reviews were not good. There is a prior thread on it on this forum.

Lake Chelan is a great venue and it is a short drive for me, but I will wait until I hear something positive about this RD. Please post a race review if you do it.
