Anybody ever had rust issues on their bike racks?

I really didn’t think that bike racks could rust, and of course right out of the warranty period when I put it back on the car a few weeks ago I noticed quite a lot of rusty patches all over the place (it’s one of those racks with the two ‘wings’ that fold down so you can load the bike on top of it without having to suspend it). I am wondering what to do about it, I heard of these ‘rust converter’ products but I’ve never used any, and the issue is also that some of the rust is on the ‘inside’ of the tube, which would make it kind of hard to reach with a paintbrush…

ideas? I couldn’t care less about what it looks like, I am just worried about structural integrity here, I wouldn’t want it to somehow fail and have my bike fall off while I’m driving (crunch)…

My Saris roof rack has been outisde for 365 days/year, for, I think, 7 years now. That’s ~2,555 days, and Ilive in Indiana, so a good number of those days have been rainy/snowy. It continues to impress me that it is in perfect condition. I am pn my second pair of skewers, due to rust, but they’re cheap.

ok, I’ve been in touch with the rack maker and no dice, rust is not covered at all despite this being only a year old, cmon, the guy on the phone was like ‘if the rack was stored in a damp environment rust happens, that’s not our fault’, well, I guess BC qualifies as a ‘damp environment’ all right!

What brand/type would people here living in wet/damp climates recommend for a 1 1/2 hitch mount receiver? Yakima? Thule? I wouldn’t want to spend huge amounts of money if possible, but of course I don’t want something I’ll have to junk next year again…

My thule trunk rack is really, really rusted after 2 seasons.
