I couldn’t find the previous post on this. But in June '09. I was hit by a Deer. April that same year a buddy was too. My accident was, thankfully, witnessed by several club members, so I’m not making it up. It was dusk and while we waited for the group to catch up after riding down the bluffs to the Mississippi river bottoms, we see several deer 1200 yds out running fast, angling back towards the bluffs. Think nothing of it. I take off parallel to the toe of the bluff and am up to speed 100 yards that direction. With shoulder high grass along the side of the highway the deer crosses heading towards me from “8-o’clock”. It kind of under cuts me and I go air born, flip hit the pave with my upper shoulders and head and backwards summer sault on the pave. My bike went higher for more rotation and a triple flip. I pop up quick with a crushed helmet and minor road-rash. Of course the majority of fellow club riders were so concerned that they went to check the condition of my bike, before they checked on me.
( As a joke, my buddies bought a Deer Tag for me that fall.)
Note to hunters as we enter Deer season. Kill one for me!
In 2005 at Ironman CDA a deer jumped out on the old bike path trail section. It passed inbetween the riders & just kept on going. Had a quick chat about it to the riders who witnessed it,laughed & kept going. It would have ruined someone’s day if they collided!
Already done, sir! Going after my spike elk tomorrow…
A few weeks ago my buddy was riding down Snow Bowl here in Flagstaff, AZ and collided with a deer. He said he was going pretty fast, but was lucky to land in some dirt on the side of the road. He just had some bad road rash. His bike wasn’t too messed up, and was back riding within a couple of days.
About a week later, he was riding up Snow Bowl again, this time with a friend following behind in a truck. This is the picture he took.

About 2 yrs ago, my family and I went to visit relatives in mid-west PA. The relatives homestead is in a rural area where they have carved out coal-mining roads, that are now used by locals, very few locals. Very rural. Great roads/trails to run on for an average endurance training junkie like myself. Several twists and turns on those roads, elevations that a southern boy is not used to, great scenery to view. Gorgeous summer morning. Excitement in the air, as I head out for about an hour long run. About 35 mins into the run (in other words, about at my turning-point or farthest distance from the homestead), I see movement on the mountain side. Movement that continues to head down to the road that I just ran on. A black bear about 200 yards ahead of me. I have absolutely nothing with me for any protection if needed. And I have zero experience around any type bear, aggressive or not. I feel helpless. There is no other way for me to get home except back UP said road. The bear (no cubs) stops, sniffs, and continues into the woods. No interest in me. I make noise and sprint UP the road (uphill at that point, of course) past the point of the bear. I continue to sprint, look back, sprint, look back, etc as I am twisting, turning thru the woods when out of nowhere come two deer jumping across the trail maybe five yards in front of me.
At this point, my heart rate was already thru the roof and certainly spiked at that point. How I did not soil myself, I do not know. For the remainder of my sprint home, I prayed and bargained with the Lord above for my safe arrival to my family, vowing to never argue with my wife again. I did see a few rabbits, several birds, couple dogs as a “cool down” the last few mins of the run. I arrived safely. My wife, upon greeting me in the kitchen, asked “Are you feeling ok? What happened?” For that moment, I just said “Nothing. But I can never argue with you again.”
We have since argued, and that remains one of the best negative split runs I have ever done. Wish it had been filmed.
On a mountain bike. Dropped into the start of a nice trail as several deer came up the path. Ended up on my ass in the brush beside the trail. Its not uncommon here in Southern Indiana. I’ve also hit three with trucks.** I’ve killed hundreds with locomotives**.
This answers a question I’ve always had and is the most interesting thing I’ve read in a while.
You’d almost think these collisions are intentional!

No, just proof that deer are that stupid.

LOL
So this video opens up the question as to whether the deer came after me on purpose or was it an accident?
