I bought a Trek SC 7.5 last week. (Right in my price range $3,000-$4,000).
I was kinda worried that Cervelo was going to come out with their bike in the low $3k price range and then I would have always wondered “Should I have waited and gone for the P5?”.
Thanks Cervelo. Your bike looks sweet and I am glad that it is priced out of my range.
How much for P5?
Yep! I have a 2007 P2C that is heading into it’s sixth season and I have an itch to upgrade it. The gain to a P3 didn’t seem worth it, the P4 is not appealing to me and the P5 is way more than I could ever justify. So I guess the P2C stays in my stable for while longer …
From the home page:
Available sizes for this new P5 will be 48, 51, 54, 56, 58 and 61cm, and the UCI legal frame set (no hydraulic brake) will retail for $4,500 and a Dura-Ace complete bike version (with Magura RT6TT) can be had for $6,000. The P5 TRI frame set (with RT8TT brakes, deeper fork and brake cover plus new aero bar) will be available for $6,500 and the Dura-Ace Di2 complete bike for $10,000.
WOW!!! Crazy pricing but the worst thing about it is that people will be going crazy paying that price.
All of a sudden my P4 is looking just fine.
Yup, I’m keeping the P3…in 2 years I’ll get a P5 for a couple of grand on fleabay or in the classifieds somewhere…or I’ll score an even sicker deal on the P4…
specialized shiv camelback.
I just bought a P3 with the $1000 off deal, so I was really happy that the P5 was not $2500. Love my P3 so far and happy I got a good deal.
Given some of the prices I’ve seen this year and last from other companies, but price doesn’t seem high at all. I AM a little surprised that Cervelo came at this price point given the apparent commercial failure of the P4 coupled with the lower prices and discounts for P2s and 3s.
Can’t wait to see one in person!

This was my biggest surprise, the shiv at least has a lower price point where you can get into the frameset game at 2800. Now cervelo only has the p3 sitting at 2500 and a huge gap to the p5. For full bikes you can get a shiv for 3300 vs 3350 for a p3. I think thats the bread and butter area for tris, look how many p3’s you see at races, Given the number of people who will actually pay 10 grand for a bike, I’m expecting to see a lot of shiv’s this year vs p5’s.
$4800 P4 frame
$1000 Zipp Vuka + stem
$700 RT8TT brakes (~600 Euros)
$6500
P5 TRI w/bar & brakes
$6500
.
The price appears to be in line with the bikes it is apparently meant to compete with.

Yep, it is a much better looking bike, IMO, than the P4.
But I will still take my setup, a very slightly used SC 7.2, upgraded to SRAM Red, with campy center pull front brake and Zipp disc with 808 front that I also got used from ST classifieds, at half the cost or less and I bet it is 90-95% as fast/aero. People would be surprised how much bike they can get with a little bit of patience and surfing the classifieds for some deals.
With that pricing, my P3-SL is looking better all the time.
The first thing a bike has to be for me is good looking. I don’t want to ride anything I don’t find visually appealing regardless of price. Thankfully, there are plenty of bikes out there to allow this attitude. I am a Cervelo guy, but I find anything above the P3 unappealing and when the P2 and P3 eventually get phased-out I won’t consider purchasing a Cervelo frame new. To me the new P5 looks like a sellout …a Trek TTX mashed together with a Shiv. Bring on the flames.
I hear you on that one, love my P3-SL, still does not stop me drooling over all the new carbon frames. But I doubt I would be much faster for all the $$$ spent on the latest and greatest.
Maybe they will come out with several different versions in 2013, like Felt did for the DA. For the Specialized Shiv (Comp for $3.5K), Felt DA (DA4 for $4K) and Trek SC (9.5 for $6K) you can get lower priced versions with downgraded components.
If you want the P5 Tri Full bike your only option is $10K (for new DA back in 2011 your only option was $12K)

I’m somewhat glad as well because the $10k price tag puts it into the ridiculous category to me. I know triathletes are on the high end of average salaries; that being said, that’s a lot of money for a tri bike. I definitely get a lot more use out of my road bike than I do my P3C.
Isn’t cutting edge stuff, and the best stuff supposed to be “expensive”. I think that our consumer culture has been lulled into what I think is false sense that people can have both the best, and have it cheaply at the same time!
I think unless you are regularly cracking 2:20 in a half you are better served getting a good coach. I live in NorCal and there is a ton so money at the local races. See far to many guys rocking $10k bikes who can’t average 24mph for an Olympic to save their life. Maybe I am old school. I am all for the technology, but not as a crutch.
