I am coming up empty at a LBSs around me. I see a lot of vests that are more like shells but I am looking for something thermal. Would love some first had recommendations before I order something online.
I recently got an email from Competitive Cyclist advertising the Castelli Alpha jacket. I don’t know if it comes in the form of a vest, but it looks pretty feature-packed. Expensive, but feature-packed.
More in the “Expensive, but worth it” category is the Assos Falkenzahn. Basically it’s like a winter jacket, except without the sleeves. Fleecy soft inner, windstop panels in the front, and pocket-space in the back. Very well made, very expensive.
I don’t get why you want an insulated cycling vest. If it is cold enough to want something insulated wouldn’t you also want warmth on your arms?

Vest used to insulate you from the wind, I rock a vest a lot while riding in Europe.
Normally not “insulated”, wear the right layers with your jerseys and you wont need an “insulated” vest.
They are ment to take them off and stash them in your back pocket once you warm up. I wear mine with short sleeves mostly.
Look into the Gabba by castelli though it rocks.

I know what a vest is used for and I use one all the time to block the wind in high 40s low 50s, but that isn’t what it sounds like the OP is asking for. It sounds like he is asking for an insulated version to wear in lower temps to block the temps and keep his core warm. For me I wouldn’t use a vest for that I would use a jacket, so that my arms would be insulated also.
To answer your question, I do layer up my arms as well. If I need to cool down a little I can easily unzip the top for a few mins should things heat up, but you can’t do that on your arms with a jacket. I would rather layer with a insulated vest paired with insulated arm sleeves. Gives me more options when shedding.
I think Pearl Izumi makes a primaloft cycling vest.
