I have a integrated HS on my bike with about 1/2 inch of uncut steertube that extends above the stem. Aside from the probably-nominal weight, aerodynamic and aesthetic penalties, is this problematic? For example, it wouldn’t contribute to a loosening headset or anything else mechanical, would it?
LBS tells me it would, and I should definitely cut the steerer to be flush with the top of the stem. Just want a second opinion, mainly because I could not follow their reasoning.
Mine are huge. I’m hesitant to cut them because if I sell them and the person doesn’t want to ride as aggressively as me that would be a problems. I think I have 3.5 spacers on top of my headset on my P2Sl. Looks like hell but I haven’t died yet…

No. Not if the headset has been done correctly. One slight concern can be with carbon steerers, if you have so much extra steerer that the compression plug is outside the stem clamp it can be bad for the steerer.
Generally you would cut the steerer so it is just above the stem with a 3-5mm spacer under the compression cap. This is to ensure full contact between stem and steerer.
