Any one have experience with outplacement firms?

I have been looking into an outplacement firm, specifically Chandler-Hill to help with the job search. I have looked into others and passed on them, but these guys seem to put a lot more effort into your search and helping you. They also claim to have a lot of local contacts. However, the fee is STEEP and most of the risk is up front, and mine. Anyone have any anecdotes, good or bad, on using these guys?

thx

Have no experience with the firm you listed but used to be a part time consultant with DBM. The prime purpose of most outplacement firm is to assist in the whole job search process - from resume to interviewing skills - but the firm I worked for did not find actual opportunities for you to pursue. So please be careful about what your expectations of the firm are. I think many people given the correct motivation are able to do the prep work themselves. Hope this helps.

I have worked with quite a few agencies. I used to work as an IT contractor/consultant for about 12rs before taking a full time position, which I got through an agency. I never paid a dime. What is their motivation to find you a job if you have paid up front?

It has been about 5yrs and considering the economy has changed I may be a bit out of touch but I would be skeptical about an agency that charges upfront fees or any fees at all. The agency usually collects the finder fees from the employer.

The arrangement you are taking about reminds me of the modeling agencies that charge a bunch of fees and promise to get you into the “business”.

Be careful and good luck.
